Johnson County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Mountain City .

The county is located in the extreme northeast of Tennessee, borders North Carolina to the east, Virginia to the north and has an area of ​​784 square kilometers, of which 11 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Washington County, Virginia, Grayson County, Virginia, Ashe County, North Carolina, Watauga County, North Carolina, Avery County, North Carolina, Carter County, and Sullivan Counties .

history

Johnson County was formed on January 2, 1836 from parts of Carter County. It was named after Thomas Johnson, an early settler and justice of the peace in the area.

The Butler House is one of seven entries for the county in the NRHP.

Seven buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of August 18, 2018.

According to the 2000 census , Johnson County had 17,499 people in 6,827 households and 4,751 families. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer.
