Watauga County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Boone , named after Daniel Boone , a US pioneer and border guard who developed the so-called Wilderness Trail and founded the town of Boonesborough in Kentucky .

The county is located in northwest North Carolina, borders Tennessee to the west , is about 35 km from Virginia to the north , and covers an area of ​​810 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by Ashe County , Wilkes County , Caldwell County, and Avery Counties .

Watauga County is divided into 15 townships : Bald Mountain, Beaverdam, Blowing Rock, Blue Ridge, Boone, Brushy Fork, Cove Creek, Elk, Laurel Creek, Meat Camp, New River, North Fork, Shawneehaw, Stony Fork, and Watauga.

Watauga County was formed in 1849 from parts of Ashe County, Caldwell County, Wilkes County, and Yancey County. It was named after the Watauga River running in this area .

The Flat Top Estate (2009) is one of 22 entries for the county on the National Register of Historic Places .

According to the 2000 census , Watauga County had 42,695 people. Of these, 5,392 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 16,540 households and 9,411 families. The mean age ( median ) was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 99.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 98.2 males.

The median income for a household (median) was 32 611  US $ , and the median income for a family $ 45,508. Males had a median income of $ 29,135 and females $ 22,006. The per capita income was $ 17,258. 7.2 percent of families and 17.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line, including 11.5 percent under the age of 18 and 10.6 percent aged 65 or over.
