Boonesborough is a US community in Madison County , Kentucky .

The Kentucky River runs through the city. Boonesborough is named after its founder Daniel Boone , who in 1775 set up a base camp at this point, the end point of the Wilderness Road he opened up , and lived there from 1775 to 1779. Boone successfully led the fortified settlement through the siege of 1778 during the American Revolutionary War .

After 1800 the population continued to decline until Boonesborough was no longer considered a town in the 1820 census . The fort fell into disrepair and the walls were used as building material. It wasn't until the 20th century that people began to get interested in the city again.

Fort Boonesborough State Park was opened in 1963 and archaeological digs have been carried out here since 1987 .
