Clay County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Hayesville , which was named after a local politician named George Hayes.

The county is located almost in the far west of North Carolina, borders Georgia to the south and has an area of 571 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Macon County and Cherokee Counties .
Clay County is divided into six townships : Brasstown, Hayesville, Hiwassee, Shooting Creek, Sweetwater and Tusquittee.
history
Clay County was formed on February 20, 1861 from parts of Cherokee County. It was named after Henry Clay , an American politician, member of the House of Representatives , the Senate , Secretary of State and opponent of slavery . A total of five times he ran unsuccessfully for the office of president , some of which failed in the primaries .
Three buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 23, 2018), including the Clay County Courthouse .

As of the 2000 census , Clay County's population was 8,775. 124 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 3,847 households and 2,727 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.01 percent white, 0.80 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.15 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.56 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.83 percent of the population.
Of the 3,847 households, 23.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.8 percent of these were married couples living together, 7.5 percent were single mothers and 29.1 percent were non-families. 26.3 percent were single households and 14.4 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.68 people.
18.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 29.8 percent between 45 and 64, and 22.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 47 years. For all females there were 94.9 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 91.4 men.
The median income for a household in the 31,397 US $ and the median income for a family was $ 38,264. Males had a median income of $ 29,677 versus $ 19,529 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,221. 11.4 percent of the population and 7.8 percent of families lived below the poverty line, including 14.6 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 13.0 percent of senior citizens aged 65 and over.
