Harnett County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 91,025 people and a population density of 59 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Lillington , named after Alexander Lillington , a patriot in the American Revolutionary War.
geography
The county is located just southwest of the geographic center of North Carolina and has an area of 1,557 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wake County , Johnston County , Sampson County , Cumberland County , Moore County , Lee County, and Chatham Counties .
Harnett County is divided into 13 townships : Anderson Creek, Averasboro, Barbecue, Black River, Buckhorn, Duke, Grove, Hectors Creek, Johnsonville, Lillington, Neills Creek, Stewarts Creek, and Upper Little River.
history
Harnett County was formed on February 7, 1855 from parts of Cumberland County. It was named after Cornelius Harnett , a patriot in the American War of Independence and a member of the Continental Congress .

After the census in 2000 91 025 people lived in Harnett County. 2,887 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 33,800 households and 24,099 families. The population density was 59 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.13 percent white, 22.50 percent African American, 0.87 percent Native American, 0.65 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.21 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.57 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.86 percent of the population.
Of the 33,800 households, 36.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.2 percent of these were married couples living together, 13.5 percent were single mothers and 28.7 percent were non-families. 23.3 percent were single households and 8.5 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.07.
27.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 10.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 32.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 19.9 percent between 45 and 64, and 10.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For all females there were 97.4 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 95.0 men.
The median income for a household (median) was 35 105 US $ , the median income for a family $ 41,176. Males had a median income of $ 30,265 versus $ 22,283 for women. The per capita income was $ 16,775. 14.9 percent of the population and 11.3 percent of families are below the poverty line. This included 17.2 percent of residents under the age of 18 and 19.4 percent of residents aged 65 or over.
