Sampson County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Clinton , named after Richard Clinton , on whose land the place was built.

The county is located in central southeast North Carolina, about 60 km to the southeast from the Atlantic Ocean , about 70 km to the southwest from South Carolina and has an area of ​​2,454 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Johnston County , Wayne County , Duplin County , Pender County , Bladen County , Cumberland County, and Harnett Counties .

Sampson County is divided into 19 townships : Belvoir, Dismal, Franklin, Halls, Herring, Honeycutt, Lisbon, Little Coharie, McDaniels, Mingo, Newton Grove, North Clinton, Piney Grove, Plain View, South Clinton, South River, Taylors Bridge, Turkey and Westbrook.

Sampson County was formed in 1784 from parts of Duplin County. It was named after John Sampson , a member of the British House of Commons .

According to the 2000 census , Sampson County had 60,161 people in 22,273 households and 16,214 families. The population density was 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 59.76 percent white, 29.95 percent African American, 1.81 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.09 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 6.95 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.13 percent were descended from two or more races. The per capita income was $ 14,976. 17.6 percent of the population and 13.5 percent of families are below the poverty line. 21.5 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 21.5 percent are 65 years of age or older.
