Wilson County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Wilson .

The county is located in east-central North Carolina and has an area of 969 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Nash County , Edgecombe County , Pitt County , Greene County , Wayne County, and Johnston County .

Wilson County is divided into ten townships : Black Creek, Cross Roads, Gardners, Old Fields, Saratoga, Springhill, Stantonsburg, Taylors, Toisnot, and Wilson.

history

Wilson County was formed on February 13, 1855 from parts of Edgecombe County, Johnston County, Nash County and Wayne County. It was named, like the district capital, Wilson, after Louis D. Wilson , a politician and officer who died in the Mexican-American War .

A total of 28 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 18, 2018).

Wilson County's population was 73,814 as of the 2000 census . 1,865 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 28,613 households and 19,771 families. The population density was 77 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 55.83 percent white, 39.33 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.42 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.21 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.92 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 6.04 percent of the population.

Of the 28,613 households, 31.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.1 percent of these were married couples living together, 16.5 percent were single mothers and 30.9 percent were non-families. 26.4 percent were single households and 10.2 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.03.

25.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64, and 12.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For all females there were 91.3 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 87.2 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 33,116 and that of a family was $ 41,551. Males had a median income of $ 30,364 versus $ 21,997 for women. The per capita income was $ 17,102. 18.5 percent of the population and 13.8 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 24.7 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 21.3 percent of those aged 65 and over.
