Wilkes County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Wilkesboro .

The county is located in northwest North Carolina, about 30 km to the north from Virginia , about 35 km to the west from Tennessee , and has an area of ​​1968 square kilometers, of which 7 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Surry County , Yadkin County , Iredell County , Alexander County , Caldwell County , Watauga County , Ashe County, and Alleghany Counties .

Wilkes County is divided into 24 townships : Antioch, Beaver Creek, Boomer, Brushy Mountains, Call, Edwards, Elk, Jobs Cabin, Lewis Fork, Lovelace, Moravian Falls, Mulberry, New Castle, North Wilkesboro, Reddies River, Rock Creek, Somers , Stanton, Traphill, Hays, Union, Walnut Grove and Wilkesboro.

Wilkes County was formed in 1777 from parts of Surry County. This measure came into force on February 12, 1778. It was named, like the district capital Wilkesboro, after John Wilkes , a British journalist and radical politician.

According to the 2000 census , Wilkes County had 65,632 people in 26,650 households and 19,321 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.95 percent white, 4.16 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.71 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.66 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the city was $ 34,258, and the median income for a family was $ 40,607. Men had a median income of $ 27,346 versus women of $ 21,089.
