Wayne County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Goldsboro , which was named after Major Matthew Goldsborough , a future railroad engineer.

The county is located in east-central North Carolina and has an area of 1442 square kilometers, of which 11 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Wilson County , Greene County , Lenoir County , Duplin County , Sampson County, and Johnston County .
Wayne County is divided into twelve townships : Brogden, Buck Swamp, Fork, Goldsboro, Grantham, Great Swamp, Indian Springs, Nahunta, New Hope, Pikeville, Saulston and Stoney Creek.
history
Wayne County was formed on November 2, 1779 from the defunct Dobbs County. It was named after Anthony Wayne , a general in the American Revolutionary War .
A total of 17 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 18, 2018).

Wayne County's population of 113,329 people as of the 2000 census . 4,635 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 42,612 households and 30,254 families. The population density was 79 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 61.28 percent white, 33.02 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.96 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.07 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.25 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.94 percent of the population.
Of the 42,612 households, 34.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.6 percent of these were married couples living together, 15.4 percent were single mothers and 29.0 percent were non-families. 24.5 percent were single households and 9.0 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.03.
26.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.9 percent were between 18 and 24 years old, 30.5 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 21.9 percent between 45 and 64, and 11.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For all females there were 97.3 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 94.3 men.
The median income for a household in the 33,942 US dollars and the median income for a family was $ 40,492. Males had a median income of $ 28,396 versus $ 21,854 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,010. 13.8 percent of the population and 10.2 percent of families lived below the poverty line, including 18.6 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 15.2 percent of those aged 65 and over.
