Along with Klein Stove, Klein Schwaß and Kritzmow, Groß Schwaß is part of the municipality of Kritzmow in the Rostock district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The village was first mentioned in 1319 as a dwarf in the lifting role of the Sonnenkamp monastery in Neukloster . At that time it already had ten farm positions. In 1328 the village was sold by Henneke and Heinrich von Bülow to the hospitals Zum Heiligen Georg and Zum Heiligen Geist in Rostock . The place is about seven kilometers from the center of the Hanseatic city and borders directly on the western city limits.

In Groß Schwaß there is a stop on the Wismar – Rostock railway line .

In 1993 the village still had 109 inhabitants, in 2004 it was 296 (156 households). An industrial park and single-family houses were built.

Every year there is a big Easter bonfire in Groß Schwaß.
