history
New monastery
The Kussiner Castle was located in the Neukloster area around 1170. It is believed that it was in what is now the inner city.
The Sonnenkamp Monastery, founded by Heinrich Borwin I , was still located in the small village of Parchow near Ilow Castle . The Parchow monastery was relocated to Neukloster just eight years after it was founded and was first mentioned there in 1219. The castle fell into disrepair over time, but the monastery developed into a cultural and economic center for the area. In 1235 the nearby town of Bryzelaz (now a desert) is mentioned. In the mid-14th century, lands and possessions were most extensive. The monastery was dissolved in 1555 and its property fell to the sovereigns of Mecklenburg , who managed it from then on.
In the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, both Neukloster and Wismar fell to Sweden . The new monastery office was established. Neukloster's Swedish times were marked by poverty and need. Swedish rule over Neukloster and Wismar ended de facto in 1803, when Sweden pledged Neukloster with the Malmö lien against payment of 1,250,000 thalers for 99 years to the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin . Neukloster formally reverted to Germany in 1903, and Sweden waived the redemption of the pledge.
Neukloster's local importance increased when the teachers' college from Ludwigslust was relocated to the small town in 1862 and the state institution for the blind was opened in Neukloster in 1864. The influx to Neukloster increased rapidly; Crafts and trades flourished. In 1887 Neukloster was connected to the regional rail network via the Wismar – Karow railway line .
Neukloster received town charter on April 1, 1938; the population doubled from around 2,500 to almost 5,000 after the Second World War.
The city changed and took on a small-town appearance. The cityscape was increasingly determined by the influx and new buildings. A library, a cinema, an old people's home, a stadium, schools, a kindergarten, the Catholic Church and the market square were built.
From 1952 until joining the Federal Republic of Germany in 1990, Neukloster was in the GDR district of Rostock . At the district level, the city belonged to the district of Wismar-Land between 1952 and 1994 and since then to the district of Northwest Mecklenburg in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .
The inner city has been completely renovated since 1991 as part of the urban development subsidy.
Ravensrest
Gut Ravensruh was founded in 1787. The manor house dates from 1806. The manor complex has served as a sociotherapeutic addiction facility since 1995.
Incorporations
On July 1, 1950, the previously independent communities of Neuhof near Neukloster and Nevern were incorporated.

coat of arms
Blazon : “Split; in front in gold a half-looking, gold-crowned black bull's head at the crack with a torn red mouth, silver teeth, a knocked out red tongue, torn neck fur and silver horns; behind in red a slanting silver abbess's staff with a golden curve turned to the left, accompanied on both sides by a silver heraldic lily. "
The coat of arms was awarded on August 16, 1903 by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV of Mecklenburg-Schwerin , redrawn in 1993 in the course of the flag approval and registered under number 78 of the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. |
|
Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms was awarded by the ruling Grand Duke on the occasion of the centenary of the reunification of the Domanialamt Neukloster with Mecklenburg-Schwerin. In the coat of arms, the bull's head as a small sovereign symbol of the Mecklenburg ruling house is intended to refer to the founding of the monastery by Heinrich Borwin I, Prince of Mecklenburg, and to the fact that the patch belongs to the duchy, from 1815 the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, as well as the abbess staff and the off the lilies borrowed from the monastery seal from 1231 remind us of the former nunnery itself. The tinging of the fields is intended to refer to the diocese of Schwerin, whose then Bishop Brunward confirmed the founding of the monastery. |
- Historical coat of arms
Blazon : "In gold over a green three-mountain, a radiant red sun topped with a golden swastika."
The coat of arms was designed by Hans Herbert Schweitzer . It was awarded in the spring of 1941 by the Reich Governor in Mecklenburg. |
|
Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms lost its validity soon after the end of World War II. |
flag
The flag was designed by Roland Bornschein from Wismar and approved on January 25, 1994 by the Ministry of the Interior.
The flag consists of a fifth of the length of the flag cloth from a black stripe across the longitudinal axis of the flag cloth and four fifths, which are five times striped by yellow and red lengthways. In the middle of the alternating longitudinal stripes above everything is the city coat of arms, which is four-ninths of the height of the flag.
