The Schweriner Volkszeitung (short: SVZ ) is a subscription - daily newspaper for West Mecklenburg, parts of Prignitz , the Amt Neuhaus in Lower Saxony (together correspond to the former district Schwerin ) and Rostock. In the Rostock region it appears as North German Latest News (NNN for short) with the same cover section as a journalistic unit . Der Prignitzer is sold in the Prignitz . Together with the Ostsee-Zeitung and the Nordkurier from Neubrandenburg, the entire state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is locally divided and covered.

The sold circulation is 69,369 copies, a decrease of 51.9 percent since 1998. The paper is read by around 280,000 people per issue (total distribution, media analysis 2009). The free weekly newspaper express is distributed to all households in the core distribution area on Wednesdays .

history

On April 10, 1946, the first edition of the Landes-Zeitung appeared - organ of the state executive of the SED in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The newspaper received extensive paper allocations and was able to print a circulation of 100,000 copies in 1946, which increased to 170,000 copies in 1947. At the same time, the approved editions of the competitors, these were Der Demokratie (CDU) and Norddeutsche Zeitung (LDPD), were limited to 20,000 copies by the Soviet military administration through paper allocations. The first editors-in-chief were Heinz Alois Pohlmeyer (SPD) and Erich Glückauf (KPD). With the dissolution of the federal states and the formation of the districts , the state newspaper became the SVZ. Since 1952, the SVZ had the subtitle "Organ of the District Management of the SED" and had eleven local editorial offices in the north-west of the GDR , which produced a total of 173,800 copies per day.

The Burda publishing house , where magazines like Bunte , Focus and girlfriend appear, bought in 1991 by the Treuhand agency next to the leaf Rostock North German Latest News the Schweriner Volkszeitung . In 2005 the paper was sold by the Burda Group to the Schleswig-Holsteinische Zeitungsverlag (sh: z) and is today, like sh: z, a wholly-owned subsidiary of medien holding: nord GmbH based in Flensburg. The newspaper publisher Schwerin has been operating under the umbrella brand medienhaus: nord since August 2012. This is intended to bundle the common competencies of the three strong newspaper titles (SVZ, NNN, Der Prignitzer ), the weekly newspapers and modern, future-oriented digital offers, as managing director Andreas Gruczek said when the umbrella brand was introduced.

The Schweriner Volkszeitung went online with editorial articles for advertising purposes on May 5, 1995 and was thus the first German daily newspaper on the Internet alongside the taz - the daily newspaper . Since July 2, 2007, the newspaper has also been published as an e-paper . Around 280,000 unique users currently use the digital offers of medienhaus: nord every month.

From October 2008 to March 2013 the cover of the newspaper was created by the outsourced mv: m Mantelredaktion GmbH, which has also been supplying Nordkurier since April 2009 . Nordkurier and Schweriner Volkszeitung each held 50 percent of the mv: m . In the spring of 2013, the Nordkurier withdrew from the joint editorial team. "Various editorial realignments" had resulted in "different journalistic demands than at the beginning of the cooperation", it was said from Neubrandenburg at the time. Since then, mv: m Mantelredaktion GmbH has been producing again exclusively for the newspapers of medienhaus: nord. At the end of 2014, the remaining main editors and employees were integrated into medienhaus: nord.

The print edition consists of the newspaper cover (the main part of the newspaper with national news from the country, Germany and the world, from regional economy, sport, culture and society) and the family magazine (with advice, topics, special interest and the daily children's page) as well as from the local section.

Depending on where the reader lives, there are the following local titles: “Zeitung für die Landeshauptstadt”, “Zeitung für Lübz-Goldberg-Plau”, “Anzeiger für Sternberg-Bruel-Warin”, “Güstrower Anzeiger”, “Bützower Zeitung”, “Parchimer Zeitung” "," Gadebusch-Rehnaer Zeitung "," Ludwigsluster Tageblatt "and" Hagenower Kreisblatt ". Since parts of Prignitz, which belonged to Brandenburg, belonged to the Schwerin district and thus to the SVZ's sales area until the fall of the Berlin Wall , the paper appears here as Der Prignitzer - Brandenburger Allgemeine , with independent Brandenburg cover pages. In the Hanseatic city of Rostock, the paper appears with varied content and forms as "North German Latest News - Rostocker Anzeiger" in competition with the Ostsee-Zeitung, which belongs to the Madsack Group .

The Schweriner Volkszeitung is the donor of the audience award at the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Film Festival .

Since the mid-1990s, the SVZ has been organizing a school newspaper project under the motto “Newspaper in School - ZiSch”. The students of the registered school classes learn about journalism , newspaper production and media skills . As part of the project, the students have the opportunity to write articles themselves, which are regularly published on special pages. In 2015 around 7,000 children and young people took part in the project.

The medienhaus: nord portfolio also includes regular special publications and seasonal magazines as well as numerous events for readers and selected target groups. In addition, medienhaus: nord is involved in numerous media partnerships for the region. The publishing services include u. a. the addressed delivery of letters as well as flyers and brochures. As a 100% subsidiary of medienholding: nord (Flensburg), numerous other products and services are also available.

Journalistic standards

In 2016, the SVZ took over unchecked xenophobic rumors about rape and began, as the police had already doubted their authenticity in their first press release, the message with the words "Rostock Police Headquarters is silent".
