Die Bunte (spelling: BUNTE ) is a German-language magazine . It is published by Hubert Burda Media . The first edition appeared in 1948 under the name "Das Ufer". Under the direction of Hubert Burda , Bunte developed into a modern consumer magazine. Today, Bunte is one of the German magazines with the highest circulation and one of the Group's most popular media brands. The sold circulation is 350,729 copies, a decrease of 48.6 percent since 1998. After Patricia Riekel withdrew , Robert Pölzer took over the editor-in-chief in July 2016 .

history

After the end of the Second World War , the French authorities commissioned Franz Burda to design an illustrated magazine. He then launched the first edition under the name Das Ufer in 1948 . While the editorial part was initially provided by the French authorities, an independent editorial team was established in the early 1950s. The magazine reported on various social events from the start. In 1953, on the occasion of the coronation of Elizabeth II, a special edition of 100,000 copies was produced. Franz Burda had previously bought the image rights (against the will of his family) on credit. In 1954, Das Ufer was renamed Bunte Illustrierte . Large-format photo series in the middle of the sheet, already printed in color, formed an essential element.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Bunte developed into one of the best-selling German consumer magazines. Acquisitions also played a role in the expansion of the paper: in 1958 the “Deutsche Illustrierte” was taken over. In 1960, the Münchner Illustrierte was added with a print run of around 500,000 copies, so that the Bunte Münchner Illustrierte exceeded the million mark for the first time in early 1961. In addition, the publishing house acquired the traditional “ Frankfurter Illustrierte ” in 1963 , which was also merged with Bunten. From then on the paper was called Bunte Münchner Frankfurter Illustrierte . In the 1960s, in addition to high society, Bunte also increasingly addressed reconstruction, movies and music. The magazine received more attention, for example, with a photo series about the Iron Curtain .

In July 1972 the "Bunte Illustrierte" appeared for the first time under the short name "Bunte". In the following years, the paper was mainly shaped by Hubert Burda : In 1974 he started out as an editor at Bunte. Two years later he took over the editor-in-chief from Bernd Ruland . Under his leadership, the illustrated magazine developed into a modern general-interest magazine for the middle class. In the mid-1970s, Bunte became the best-selling magazine in Germany. In 1983 the Burda publishing house inaugurated its new headquarters at Arabellapark in Munich . In the same year, various editorial offices, including the Bunte, moved from the headquarters in Offenburg to the Bavarian capital. In 1985 Burda-Verlag bought Rolf Mengele's manuscript legacy of several thousand pages for one million marks from Rolf Mengele's father Josef . From this, Bunte created a multi-part series of articles about the notorious camp doctor at Auschwitz , who was jointly responsible for the cruel medical experiments on living people. Burda-Verlag did not pay reprint fees directly to Rolf Mengele; instead, they benefited the survivors of Auschwitz and their dependents.

After the death of Franz Burda in 1986, the Burda Group was reorganized. Hubert Burda switched from editor-in-chief of Bunter to the position of publisher. Peter Boenisch was initially planned as his successor, but he had to give up this post at the end of 1986. The reasons for this were, among other things, differences about the further direction and losses of the colorful in the millions. At the end of 1986, Lothar Strobach was finally appointed as the magazine's new editor-in-chief. In 1989 Franz Josef Wagner was placed at his side. After Strobach had turned his back on Burda-Verlag in 1994, Wagner remained the sole editor-in-chief until the end of 1996. His work was only interrupted by an intermezzo by the editor-in-chief Beate Wedekind . In 1992/1993, this asserted itself as the head of the Bunter for just one year.

After Wagner had to leave due to decreasing circulation, Axel Thorer was initially discussed as the editor-in-chief of Bunten. Finally, in January 1997, Patricia Riekel took over the management of the magazine. When she took office, a politician, Gerhard Schröder , appeared on the cover of the Bunter for the first time . From then on politics became an integral part of the paper. Another example of this is the publication of holiday photos taken by Defense Minister Rudolf Scharping while the German Armed Forces were about to go abroad. Instead of the nobility, Riekel moved the so-called “new elites ” into the center. She positioned Bunte as a magazine for women with “time, money and the desire for upscale gossip”. The edition of the Bunter stabilized and in 2001 even reached a new record.

Under the direction of Riekel, the magazine developed into one of the “most dazzling media brands” in Germany. In 2001 Der Tagesspiegel ruled that Bunte was the new “leading medium of our republic”. While other magazines struggled with economic difficulties, Bunte was able to expand its market position. The paper moved to the center of the so-called Burda People Group , to which the magazines Amica and Tomorrow , for example, were later assigned. In 2002, Bunte launched its first website in cooperation with T-Online . “Bunte TV”, on the other hand, was unsuccessful: The magazine broadcast on ARD was discontinued after only six issues due to low ratings. In 2003, Burda-Verlag invested several million in a relaunch of Bunter, among other things for better paper quality and a more modern format. Despite decreasing circulation, the Bunte was economically successful in the following years. With the Focus she earned a large part of the profits of her publishing house.

In 2016 Patricia Riekel left Bunte after more than 1,000 issues. Since then, Robert Pölzer has been editor-in-chief at the head of the people magazine.

Edition

The Colorful has in recent years considerable bearing lost. The number of copies sold has fallen by 48.6 percent since 1998. It is currently 350,729 copies. This corresponds to a decrease of 332,007 units. The share of subscriptions in the circulation sold is 24.9 percent.

criticism

The Bunte was repeatedly involved in legal proceedings with public figures. In 1995, for example, Caroline von Hannover received the highest compensation for pain and suffering in German press history before the Hamburg Higher Regional Court because Bunte had published a completely made-up interview with her. This contained a lot of untrue information about her private life. The chief editor of Bunte justified itself to have been cheated by an external agency, which had sold the interview to the paper. In 1996, Tom Cruise sued Bunte for damages because they had falsely quoted him in an interview as "unable to conceive". The deputy editor-in-chief Günter Stampf , who manipulated the interview, then had to leave the publisher. The Bunte apologized to Cruise, who then dropped the lawsuit.

In 2008, the German Press Council reprimanded Bunte for violating the press code . The paper had reported on a new car model and, according to the press council, exceeded the limits of surreptitious advertising for a new product. In 2010, Stern magazine revealed that Bunte had hired an external agency to spy out the private lives of certain politicians. One of those affected, the former SPD chairman Franz Müntefering , publicly reprimanded Bunte for her working methods. In 2011, the Bunte published an interview with the presenter's ex-girlfriend before the start of the Kachelmann process , who is said to have been rewarded with 50,000 euros. While Kachelmann's defense attorney discussed the agreement in court, Burda-Verlag rejected criticism. In 2013, the former Federal President Christian Wulff obtained an injunction against the Bunte. The Cologne Regional Court forbade the illustrated magazine to give the impression that Wulff had a relationship with a music manager.

The Bunte, in turn, prevailed with her position in some legal proceedings. In 2010, for example, Charlotte Casiraghi lost a lawsuit against the paper. The daughter of Caroline von Hannover had originally resisted the publication of party photos. In 2016, Günther Jauch lost in the last instance a legal dispute over the reporting of the colorful about his wedding. Günther Jauch's lawyer saw the moderator's privacy violated. However, the European Court of Human Rights could not find any legal violations in the reporting. The German courts carefully weighed the right to privacy against the public's interest in information.

In 2020, Stefan Niggemeier questions a possible proximity between editorial recommendations and advertising in the Bunte Special Health .
