Caroline of Hanover (2009)

Caroline Louise Marguerite, Princess of Hanover, Princess of Monaco (* January 23, 1957 as Caroline Louise Marguerite Grimaldi in Monaco ), is the daughter of Prince Rainier III. of Monaco and Princess Gracia Patricia . Caroline has been referred to as "Princess Caroline" by the public and the media since she was a child.

Life

Caroline Grimaldi married finance broker Philippe Junot on June 28, 1978 in Monaco , from whom she was divorced on October 9, 1980. The marriage was on February 2, 1992 by the Roman Catholic Church for annulled .

On December 29, 1983, the princess married the Italian businessman Stefano Casiraghi (* September 8, 1960, † October 3, 1990). From this marriage there were three children:

• Andrea Albert Pierre (born June 8, 1984)
• Charlotte Marie Pomeline (born August 3, 1986) and
• Pierre Rainier Stefano (born September 5, 1987).

Stefano Casiraghi was killed in a boat accident at the Off-Shore World Championship off Cap Ferrat .

From 1990 to 1995 Caroline was in a relationship with the French film actor Vincent Lindon . She has been married to Ernst August Prince of Hanover for the third time since January 23, 1999 and has since been called Caroline Princess of Hanover .

• Alexandra Charlotte Ulrike Maryam Virginia Princess of Hanover (* July 20, 1999).

Succession to the throne

Caroline was in first place in the line of succession at the time of her birth, but with the birth of her brother Albert she lost it in favor of the younger son a year later due to the Monegasque succession.

After the death of her father Rainier III. and her brother Albert's accession to the throne in 2005, Caroline was again the next contender for the Monegasque throne and carried the title of Hereditary Princess . But she also lost this with the birth of Prince Albert's twin children in December 2014. Now she is third in line to the throne.

Princess Caroline and the media

The private life of the princess was and is constantly the subject of reporting by the international tabloids . Since the beginning of the 1990s, the princess, with the help of lawyers, consistently took action against the publication of paparazzi photographs from her private life. There were several lawsuits, some of which went through all instances up to the Federal Court of Justice , the Federal Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights . Some judgments went down in legal history as the Caroline judgments .

A ruling passed by the European Court of Human Rights in 2004 brought the European tabloids considerable restrictions on the coverage of details from the private lives of celebrities.

From the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights, among other things, a claim for damages by Princess Caroline against the Federal Republic of Germany was derived, since the German courts had not adequately protected the personal rights of the Princess and her family in the previous trials. A settlement was reached on the amount of the compensation. In 2005, Caroline received a total of 115,000 euros from the Federal Republic of Germany .
