Attractions

The Cap Ferrat is not only valued as an exquisite residential area, but is also a popular attraction for tourists. Spacious villas with partly wooded areas, the Grand-Hotel du Cap-Ferrat and a ring road on the hill ( Boulevard du Général de Gaulle ) offer a park-like ambience . In addition to some quiet bays by the sea that invite you to swim (including the most famous on Paloma Beach ), the main attraction is probably the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild museum . In 1905, the daughter of a banking millionaire, Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, had a Tuscan-style palazzo built on the Cap , whose park is one of the most beautiful gardens in Europe.

The lighthouse

The whole peninsula can be circled directly on the coast on a footpath ( Chemin des Douaniers , Chemin de la Carrière ). At its southern tip at the end of the Chemin du Phare there is a lighthouse as a navigation sign ( Phare du Cap Ferrat ). This upward tapering tower made of ashlar has a pentagonal cross-section at its base , which merges into an octagonal cross-section with increasing height . The cylindrical lamp house is located on a roof pulpit with a stone balustrade . The tower was built in 1827 at the time of the Kingdom of Sardinia in place of an even older lighthouse and its new signal light was started in 1838. Both the original and the then new tower were mainly used to guide ships into the port of Villefranche-sur-Mer. During the Second World War , the tower was destroyed by the German Wehrmacht in 1944, reconstructed by the Corps des ingénieurs des ponts et chaussées in 1949 , and its signal light was put back into operation in 1952. The lighthouse itself is now 34 meters high, so that due to its location on the peninsula slope, it reaches a total height of 78 meters above sea level and its beacon can be seen on the sea side within a radius of about 45 kilometers. The lighthouse, which is owned by the French state, includes a house, a tool shed and a larger garden.

The Sémaphore

At the highest point in the southern part of the peninsula there is also a maritime signal and observation station ( Sémaphore du Cap Ferrat ). It was in 1862 at the request of Napoleon III. erected, is now operated by the French Navy ( Marine nationale ) and serves both inland for forest fire control and on the sea side for general shipping regulations including coastal protection, sea rescue and military coastal defense. The visual and electronic monitoring ( radar ) of the surrounding land and sea areas, the transmission of electromagnetic navigation signals and the transmission, coordination and control of civil and military maritime radio traffic are carried out from a 23 meter high tower at a total height of 143 meters above sea level . The station with tower and other antenna systems is located on a locked and monitored military site, can be reached via the Chemin du Sémaphore and can also be visited every year on the French Culture Days in September.
