Deadly accident

Casiraghi was killed in an accident off the coast of Monaco on October 3, 1990 while he was trying to defend his world title in the offshore racing boat . The sea was rough during the race and the boat overturned. Casiraghi was taken in alive by lifeboats and taken to the Monaco hospital, but subsequently died there. His copilot Patrice Innocenti survived the accident. Experts who investigated the accident said that if his boat had been equipped with one of the safety cockpits that existed at the time, he would most likely have survived the accident. A few weeks earlier, he had narrowly escaped death when his boat exploded off the coast of Guernsey . As a result of his death, the safety regulations for racing boats were tightened.

Casiraghi is buried in the Chapelle de la Paix in Monaco, which is also the resting place of Pierre de Polignac .
