Malmö pledge from 1803

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Malmö pledge agreement of 1803 regulated the return of the Hanseatic city of Wismar by the Kingdom of Sweden to the Duchy of Mecklenburg .

In the Thirty Years' War the Hanseatic city of Wismar was occupied by Sweden in 1632 and fell to the Swedish crown as an imperial fiefdom in the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, together with the island of Poel and the Neukloster office .

The Malmö pledge agreement of June 26, 1803 regulated the return of these three areas by Sweden to Mecklenburg. The negotiations for Sweden were largely led and influenced by Johan Christopher Toll . King Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden had Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg remunerate himself for his distance from this outpost on the continent with 1,250,000 thalers Hamburg Banco . According to Friedrich Schlie, the purchase price was offset by fiscal income of around 46,000 thalers for Sweden in 1799. The King of Sweden ratified the Treaty of Malmö on July 19, the Duke of Mecklenburg on July 26. One copy is now in the main state archive in Schwerin .

Mecklenburg initially took the areas as pledge for 99 years and only a hundred years later on June 20, 1903, the matter was finally settled by another contract between Mecklenburg and Sweden, so that Wismar with the island of Poel and the Neukloster office after a corresponding waiver by Sweden on existing further contractual rights was again Mecklenburg. In September 1903, Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV of Mecklenburg took the city back to Mecklenburg with great celebrations in Wismar.
