Friedrich Schlie ( Luise Schmidt , 1898)

Johann Heinrich Friedrich Gustav Schlie (born December 12, 1839 in Brüel ; † July 21, 1902 in Bad Kissingen ) was a German archaeologist and art historian .

Life

Friedrich Schlie, son of the cantor and teacher of the same name (David Johann) Friedrich Schlie (1814–1905) and his wife (Helene Marie Sophie) Doris, b. Schulz (1815–1899), was already earning his living as a 16-year-old as a private tutor until he was able to take his Abitur in Rostock in 1863 . From Easter 1863 he studied at the University of Rostock , since 1865 at the University of Munich classical philology , archeology and art history . There he was a student of the archaeologist Heinrich Brunn , who was called from Rome to Munich and who pointed the way for Schlies further on. With a doctoral thesis on Helena (mythology) he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. From 1868 he was assistant secretary at the Prussian Archaeological Institute in Rome for two years .

Schwerin and goods

The beginning of his work in the service of Mecklenburg art and cultural life began for Schlie when he met Eduard Prosch , the cabinet councilor at the time and director of the Schwerin art collections. During a visit to Rome, Prosch commissioned Schlie to write a memorandum on the planned establishment of a Schwerin collection of plaster casts of ancient sculptures. After his return in 1869, Schlie worked as a teacher at the grammar school in Waren until 1877 . There he introduced himself with his two lectures, published in print in 1875, on old and new art and on the introduction of art history into the curriculum of high schools as an experienced expert in the field of art history. So in 1877 he was appointed to the Fridericianum Schwerin in order to simultaneously transfer the provisional management of the Grand Ducal Art Collections to him. After the death of the previous director Eduard Prosch in 1878, Schlie was finally appointed director. It was his merit to catalog the scattered grand ducal art treasures and to bring them together in the representative new museum building at the Schwerin Old Garden completed by Hermann Willebrand in 1882 .

Art history of Mecklenburg

His work in the Association for Mecklenburg History and Archeology is one of his other achievements . There was archivist Friedrich Lisch , who was appointed Conservator of the Art Monuments of the State of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1852 , Chairman, First Secretary and Editor of the Yearbooks for Mecklenburg History and Archeology . Friedrich Schlie was also a friend and supporter of the famous archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann .

He was appointed to the Commission for the Preservation of Monuments in 1887 by the Mecklenburg-Schwerin Grand Ducal Ministry of the Interior as an expert on artistic issues . With the appointment of the commission, the Ministry of the Interior connected the decision to publish an inventory of all art and historical monuments of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Schlie was commissioned to take on the practical organization of the necessary registration of the monuments, the overall editing of the resulting manuscripts and finally the publication of the inventory volumes. Between 1898 and 1902 he published his five-volume work Die Kunst- und Geschistor-Denkmäler des Großherzogthums Mecklenburg-Schwerin .

Honors

Friedrich Schlie received numerous awards, for example he was appointed Hofrat in 1882, Professor in 1891 and Privy Councilor in 1899. He was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute in Rome and Berlin and a permanent member of the committee of the International Art History Congress. A marble bust of Schlies by the sculptor Ludwig Brunow , created shortly after his death in 1902, and the painting by Luise Schmidt created in 1898 are in the holdings of the State Museum in Schwerin . Friedrich Schlie's grave is in the old cemetery in Schwerin.
