Live and act

After studying classical archeology and ancient history from 1943 in the USA, Münster and Kiel , he passed the state examination there and, after receiving his doctorate , went to higher education in 1949. In 1951/52 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute and from 1961 worked as a consultant and in 1962 as a senior scientific adviser at the headquarters of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin. With his writing Methymna. Archaeological contributions to the topography and history of Northern Lesbos , he completed his habilitation in 1968 at the Free University of Berlin , in 1969 became an adjunct professor of ancient history at the Saarland University and was also appointed to the chair of classical archeology at the University of Gießen in 1969 , where he worked until his Retired in 1985.

Buchholz made a special contribution to the collection of antiquities at the University of Giessen in the Wallenfels'schen Haus by bringing together the antiquities that were scattered in the post-war years and having them inventoried from 1971 onwards. He expanded the collection of antiquities to include Cypriot antiquities as well as late classical vessels and prehistoric items. The original collection and part of the coin collection are on loan in the Wallfenfels'schen Haus. In addition, Buchholz made a special contribution as an excavator of Tamassos , of which he was director between 1970 and 1981. From 1985 Buchholz was chairman of the German Orient Society and as such supported the archaeological excavations on the Tall Bi'a . He was a member of the German Archaeological Institute and edited the series Archaeologica Homerica .

Buchholz dealt with the entire ancient history of the Eastern Mediterranean and is internationally recognized as one of the most renowned researchers in this field. In Germany he is regarded as the nestor of Aegean archeology. In particular, he researched the cultural contacts and cultural transfer of the area.
