List of classical archaeologists at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of classical archaeologists at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen includes all professors who have taught or are teaching classical archeology at the University of Giessen . As a rule, this includes all university professors who were allowed to give lectures, i.e. who had completed their habilitation .

As at many other universities, Classical Archeology was initially taught in Giessen as part of Classical Philology . In 1809, the classical philologist Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker became the first professor for "Greek literature and archeology" and thus also became the first holder of a (partial) archaeological professorship in Germany. In 1826, after Welcker left for Bonn, a teaching collection of casts ("Academic Art Museum") was established. In the following years, archaeological studies were only sporadically on the curriculum. Ferdinand Dümmler taught classical philology and archeology from 1887 to 1890. The archaeologist Bruno Sauer taught in Gießen since 1892, and when he was appointed full professor on July 1, 1898, classical archeology was firmly established as a subject. Sauer taught as a professor for archeology and art history, only after his departure in 1909 were both subjects separated and represented by their own professorships. In 1928 the ordinariate was canceled again for financial reasons. The intended reoccupation in 1933, for which Margarete Bieber was planned, failed due to the racial legislation of the National Socialists. After the war the University of Giessen initially no longer had a philosophical faculty and it was not until 1964 that a full professor of classical archeology was established in Gießen, not as a separate institute but as a "professorship for classical archeology".

The two classical philologists Alfred Körte (in Gießen 1906–1913), Rudolf Herzog (1913–1936) and Hugo Hepding were also active in the field of classical archeology .

The first column shows the name of the person and their life data, the second column shows entry into the university, and the third column shows their departure. Column four names the highest position achieved at the university. At other universities, the corresponding lecturer may have made an advanced academic career. The next column lists special features, the career path or other information relating to the university or institute. The last column shows pictures of the lecturers, which is currently difficult due to the image rights.
