Hugo Hepding (born September 7, 1878 in Ulrichstein (Vogelsberg), † September 24, 1959 in Gießen ) was a German classical philologist , folklorist and librarian .

Life

Hepding studied Classical Philology, German Philology and Folklore in Bonn and Gießen , where he passed the state examination in 1902 and received his doctorate in 1903 with Albrecht Dieterich and Richard Wünsch with the dissertation “The Attiskult”. In 1904/05 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . Between 1906 and 1914 he took part in six excavation campaigns in Pergamon as an employee of Wilhelm Dörpfeld . In 1910 he received his habilitation for Classical Philology and Folklore, and in 1915 he was appointed associate professor. He gave lectures on topics in Greek philology, epigraphy and ancient religion. From 1915 to 1918 he took part in the First World War. Hepding's main occupation, however, was that of librarian: in 1902 he joined the Giessen University Library as a trainee, became an assistant librarian in the same year, in 1912 he became a librarian, and from 1945 until his retirement in late 1949 he was its director. He directed the rebuilding of the library after the war. In 1941 the Venia legendi was withdrawn from him due to membership in the Confessing Church ; In 1946 he got it back.

His most important work in the field of classical studies is his book on the myths and cult of Attis . Its main scientific importance, however, lies in the field of folklore, especially its Hessian homeland. He worked on the real encyclopedia of classical antiquity and the concise dictionary of German superstition and was co-editor of the Hessian papers for folklore .

Hepding was a co-founder of the CDU in Giessen. In 1948 he was largely responsible for the re-establishment of the Alemannia Gießen fraternity , which he had joined as a student in 1896. In 1956 the University of Gießen made him an honorary senator, in 1959 the city of Gießen made him an honorary citizen.
