history

The castle
Ulrichstein - Excerpt from the Topographia Hassiae by Matthäus Merian 1655

The origins of the place in the resulting only in ruins today castle on a 600 m high basalt rock , which originates in the core of the 12th century. The ownership structure in the 12th and 13th centuries is unclear; the castle may have come to the Landgraviate of Hesse via Büdingen and Breuberg . In 1293, 18 castles, including the Petershain and Ulrichstein castles , were destroyed by the Landgrave of Hesse , grandson of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia . “At these times there were a lot of robbery castles and murder chests in Hesse / who did not want to receive their fiefs from the princes / but were the country's enemy / ugly ones secretly / ugly ones publicly ... which the landgrave disputes and won / ... he occupies ugly ones with his own ... Petershain / Ulrichstein ... "

It is clear that in a document of 1296, the forest of Ulrichstein as a possession Henry I is shown. In the 14th century, this property came as a fief to the Lords of Eisenbach, who fortified and expanded the castle. In 1347 Ulrichstein received city rights from Ludwig the Bavarian .

The Riedesel followed the Eisenbachers as landgrave hereditary marshals and rent officials . They collected the " tithe " and also exercised jurisdiction until the end of the Old Kingdom .

A city fire in 1763 destroyed the medieval building stock with a few exceptions (Burg- Vorwerk and Haus Pebler , Ulrich-Mull-Straße). According to a plaque at the community inn, Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher stayed in Ulrichstein in October 1813 during the Wars of Liberation . In the Congress of Vienna Ulrichstein came to the province of Upper Hesse of the Grand Duchy of Hesse . The castle had become inoperative and could no longer be maintained; In 1826 it was canceled.

The statistical-topographical-historical description of the Grand Duchy of Hesse reports on Ulrichstein in 1830:

“Ulrichstein (L. Bez. Schotten) city; is located in Vogelsberg, 3 St. von Schotten, has 164 houses and 891 inhabitants, who are Protestant apart from 1 Catholics and 82 Jews. The strange old castle is located on a basalt mountain of 2501 Hess. (1924 Par.) Is raised feet above the surface of the sea, and served as the seat of the officials. The little town hangs on the eastern side, in the middle of the Ulrichsteiner Schloßberg, and is said to have been built on the western side at the beginning, only the winds that storm up from the neighboring large plain through the Bobenhauser, Feldaer and Ohmthal, and sometimes an unbearable one Causing hissing, whistling and whistling is said to have compelled the inhabitants to change their places of residence. In addition to the castle there is 1 church, 4 courtyards, namely the Langwasser, Selgen, Siegsmundshäuser and Stockmannshof and 6 grinding mills, with which 1 oil mill is connected. Cattle breeding is important, and many oxen and pigs are fattened and exported, and 3 cattle and grocer's markets are held annually. - Towards the end of the 13th century, two robbery castles stood here on the heights of the Vogelsberg: Ulrichstein and Petershain, whose builders and owners are unknown, but which were destroyed by Landgrave Heinrich I. Ulrichstein, also Molestein , was restored, Petershain is now a farm belonging to Kölzenhain. Johann von Eisenbach was enfeoffed with Ulrichstein by Landgrave Heinrich II in the first half of the 14th century and restored it at his own expense. In 1343, his brother received from the same Landgrave, with the dignity of Hereditary Marshal, the Ulrichstein House and the Bobenhausen court, just as Emperor Ludwig granted him all rights and freedoms of the city of Friedberg in 1347 for his Ulrichstein Fortress, which he surrounded with walls and moats , namely the right to have a weekly market on Thursdays and to keep 6 Jews there themselves. The church owes its existence to Mr. von Eisenbach, and Marshal Rörich II, who called it his church in 1390, gave it goods as gifts. The fiefdoms have fallen back to Hesse since the Eisenbach family left. In 1435, Landgrave Ludwig the Friedsame transferred Ulrichstein Castle to Hermann Riedesel, along with Felda and Bobenhausen. "

Plane crash

On February 12, 1948 at around 1:25 p.m., a Douglas DC-3 (C-53) airliner of the Danish airline Det Danske Luftfartselskab (DDL) ( aircraft registration number OY-DCI) collided on the flight from Copenhagen via Frankfurt to Zurich near Ulrichstein with the Vogelsberg. During the descent to Frankfurt Airport in bad weather, the pilots reported an engine failure and the inability to maintain the altitude. They planned an emergency landing in a field near Ulrichstein. However, one wing tore off. Of the 21 inmates, 12 were killed.

Incorporations

On December 31, 1971, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the town of Ulrichstein, the communities of Kölzenhain and Rebgeshain from the Lauterbach district and the communities of Bobenhausen II, Helpershain, Ober-Seibertenrod, Unter-Seibertenrod and Wohnfeld from the Alsfeld district joined together to form a new one Community together, today's town of Ulrichstein. On August 1, 1972, the municipality of Feldkrücken was added by state law.

Territorial history and administration

The following list gives an overview of the territories in which Ulrichstein was located and the administrative units to which it was subordinate:

Courts since 1803

In the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt , the judicial system was reorganized in an executive order of December 9, 1803. The “Hofgericht Gießen” was set up as a court of second instance for the province of Upper Hesse . The jurisdiction of the first instance was carried out by the offices or landlords and thus the Ulrichstein office was responsible for Ulrichstein. The court court was the second instance court for normal civil disputes, and the first instance for civil family law cases and criminal cases. The second instance for the patrimonial courts were the civil law firms. The superior court of appeal in Darmstadt was superordinate .

With the founding of the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1806, this function was retained, while the tasks of the first instance 1821–1822 were transferred to the newly created regional and city courts as part of the separation of jurisdiction and administration. Ulrichstein fell into the judicial district of the " Landgericht Schotten ". By order of the Grand Ducal Hessian Ministry of the Interior and Justice, Ulrichstein was ceded to the district of the newly established Ulrichstein District Court on December 1, 1838 .

On the occasion of the introduction of the Courts Constitution Act with effect from October 1, 1879, as a result of which the previous grand ducal Hessian regional courts were replaced by local courts in the same place, while the newly created regional courts now functioned as higher courts, the name was changed to "Ulrichstein Local Court" and allocation to the district of the regional court of Giessen .

In 1943 the Ulrichstein District Court lost its independence and became a branch of the Schotten District Court . With effect from July 1, 1968, the local court of Schotten was dissolved and Ulrichstein came to the judicial district of the Lauterbach local court . On January 1, 2005, the Lauterbach District Court was repealed as a full court and became a branch of the Alsfeld District Court . On January 1, 2012, this branch was also closed. The superordinate instances are now, the regional court Gießen , the higher regional court Frankfurt am Main and the federal court as last instance.

Culture and sights

Castle restoration

From 1991 to 2005 a local non-profit association carried out extensive restoration work and tourist documentation on the castle ruins.

Buildings

  • The town’s eye-catcher is the Ulrichstein Castle Hill , which can be seen from afar, with its castle ruins and war cemetery for domestic and foreign war victims. Below the mountain are two basalt buildings belonging to the castle complex, the customs house and the tithe barn, which date from 1464 and constitute the oldest in the city. Road tolls and tithes were collected here.
  • The Vogelsberggarten was laid out around the Ulrichstein castle ruins .
  • The Protestant church (1861), single-nave with a choir apse and slender tower, combines neo-Gothic and neo-Baroque style elements. It replaced a previous building. The flat-roofed interior has a richly ornamented gallery and a choir vault in the late Gothic style.
  • A museum with antiques is built in blue clapboards.
  • At the former district court from 1838 - beige shingles and half-timbered - next to the village fountain with a pump there are two historic linden trees: the Friedenslinde from 1870/71 and the Bismarck linden, planted for the 80th birthday of the Chancellor in 1895.
  • The former synagogue (1847), Judenbad and Judenbackhaus (1849) as well as a Jewish cemetery commemorate the former Jewish community of Ulrichstein.
  • Overall, colored clapboard construction and half-timbering - also both in combination - characterize numerous buildings in Ulrichstein. This also applies to the churches in the surrounding districts of Bobenhausen, Ober- and Unter-Seibertenrod.

Economic structure

There are no larger commercial or industrial companies in Ulrichstein. The small town relies on an infrastructure suitable for moderate local recreation and individual tourism. In addition to two hotels with regional and Italian gastronomy, there are a number of guest houses, private accommodation, holiday apartments and a holiday park. There are also many weekend houses , which mostly have owners from the Rhine-Main area .

Wind energy

Ulrichstein town wind power plant

Ulrichstein is now also known nationwide for its many wind turbines . Due to its location in the Hohen Vogelsberg with its wind-exposed ridges, there are good conditions for the use of wind energy . The first wind farm in the city was built in 1994 on the 558 m high slab above the Ober-Seibertenrod district. This was also one of the first commercial wind farms in Hessen. The operator was (and is) a special purpose vehicle of hessenEnergie GmbH , which has in turn belonged to OVAG since 2002 and now operates other wind farms in the city.

In July 1996 Ulrichstein put Germany's first municipal wind farm into operation, also in the Auf der Platte area . To date, a total of three municipal wind farms have been built, which are run by Stadtwerke Ulrichstein as a municipal company in cooperation with hessenEnergie . In contrast to wind farms from external investors, with this operator concept all income is directly available to the city's budget. There are also some citizen wind turbines . The oldest wind farm Auf der Platte also has a wind energy nature trail that provides information on several information boards about the use of wind energy.
