The District Court of Gießen is a court of ordinary jurisdiction in the central Hessian town of Gießen and one of nine district courts in the district of the Higher Regional Court of Frankfurt am Main .

The district court has its seat in Ostanlage 15 in Gießen. Six civil chambers , two chambers for commercial matters , nine criminal chambers and two criminal enforcement chambers have been set up at the regional court . The judicial district includes the district of Gießen , the Vogelsbergkreis and parts of the Wetteraukreis . The higher regional court in Frankfurt am Main is superordinate to the regional court in Giessen , and the district courts in Alsfeld , Büdingen , Friedberg (Hessen) and Giessen are subordinate .

In the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt , the judicial system was reorganized in an executive order of December 9, 1803. For the province of Upper Hesse was Hofgericht casting set up as a court of second instance. The jurisdiction of the first instance lay with the offices . The court court was the second instance court for civil litigation and the first instance for written family law cases and criminal cases. The superior court of appeal in Darmstadt was superordinate .

This function was retained when the Grand Duchy of Hesse was founded. From 1821, as part of the separation of jurisdiction from administration, the tasks of jurisdiction were transferred to the newly created regional and city courts . " Landgericht Gießen " was therefore the name for a court of first instance in Gießen next to the city court from 1821 to 1879.

The German Courts Constitution Act of 1879 led to a uniform judicial organization throughout the empire . The Giessen Court Court now became the Giessen Regional Court and became the higher-ranking second instance in the province.

The district court casting is housed in a 1878-1879 built on behalf of the Grand Ducal building construction office building, which is characterized by a strict symmetry and one in red colored sandstone held risalit distinguishes the entrance.
