history

In the Duchy of Nassau , founded in 1806, Limburg was the seat of an office that was also the lowest administrative and judicial authority. After Nassau was annexed by Prussia in 1866, the administration and the judiciary were institutionally separated. In 1867, a district court with eight and a district court with two judges started work in Limburg . The district court had its seat in a former sugar factory on Limburg Neumarkt.

After the establishment of the German Empire in 1871, the judiciary was to be standardized across the entire Reich. In 1876 the Limburg district court was to be repealed and its tasks were to be taken over by the newly founded district court in Wetzlar. After violent protests in the region, the Prussian House of Representatives decided on December 14, 1877 to establish a regional court in Limburg instead of in Wetzlar. On October 1, 1879, the relevant law came into force. Today's post office building on Frankfurter Strasse became the new seat, but from the beginning it was only intended to be a temporary solution. 14 local courts were subordinate to the authority:

Braunfels District Court District Court Diez District Court Dillenburg
Ehringshausen District Court District court Ems Hadamar District Court
Herborn District Court District court Limburg an der Lahn Marienberg District Court
Nassau District Court Rennerod District Court District court Runkel
District court Weilburg District court Wetzlar

The city of Limburg finally built the current courthouse on the Schiede, for which the judicial administration then paid rent until they bought the building in 1942. On March 29, 1882, the regional court began its work there. From April 1 to November 30, 1921, the future Chancellor Wilhelm Marx was President of the Limburg Regional Court.

In June 1945 the American military government re-established the Limburg Regional Court. It resumed its work on October 1, 1945. It had lost a large part of its district to the French occupation zone and later to the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. At the beginning of 1949, the regional court handed over the district court districts of Gladenbach and Biedenkopf to the regional court of Marburg . In 1954 an annex was added to the courthouse. The subordinate district court Bad Camberg was dissolved in 1968, the district court Hadamar has been operated only as a branch of the district court Limburg since the beginning of 2005. The decision to dissolve the Limburg Regional Court in 1977 because the district was too small was not implemented.

The regional court of Limburg plays a key role in the electronic legal communication project in Hesse. The communication software for sending signed and specially secured messages was developed here. The experience gained so far in correspondence with the legal profession is to flow into the further development in 2016, which was started in cooperation with other federal states.
