Neighboring communities
Romrod borders the town of Alsfeld in the north, the town of Schwalmtal in the east, the town of Feldatal in the south and the town of Gemünden and the town of Kirtorf in the west .
City structure
Romrod consists of the districts Nieder-Breidenbach , Ober-Breidenbach , Romrod, Strebendorf and Zell . Nieder-Breidenbach is the oldest part of the city (first mentioned in a document in 812).
history
The place Rumerode was created at the intersection of the two old streets Diotweg (later Diebsweg, means Volksweg) and the Heerstraße through the Kurzen Hessen . The first castle was built in the 11th century in the Antrift valley. Thus, a settlement may already have existed, as valley castles were often built in places that were already inhabited.
The old moated castle was built in the first half of the 12th century . Its builders were probably the ancestors of the noble family von Romrod , who were first mentioned in writing in 1197 when Ludwig von Romrod appears as a witness in a document from the Fulda Abbey . In the following centuries the Lords of Romrod occupied important offices. Heinrich von Romrod was the Hessian Marshal, and Hermann von Romrod was Commander of the Order of St. John in Grebenau . Furthermore, the abbots Heinrich VI. von Romrod (1320–1323 / 1324) in Hersfeld and Friedrich I. von Romrod (1383–1395) in Fulda should be mentioned.
The statistical-topographical-historical description of the Grand Duchy of Hesse reports on Romrod in 1830:
“Romrod (L. Bez. Alsfeld) city; is located on the Andreft, as well as on the Chaussee from Giessen to Alsfeld and 1 St. from Alsfeld. There are 189 houses and 1,089 inhabitants, who besides 10 Catholics and 47 Jews are Protestant, a church consecrated on June 1, 1690, 3 grinding mills, 1 district prison, 1 castle and a post office. The castle, distinguished by its special construction, is now used as a fruit store and the largely razed wall has been transformed into gardens. The oldest building of the castle is said to have been built in 1578. The Forsthof and the Vorwerk are both state property, are located within the village and are inhabited by civil servants. The Mühlhof is worked by 3 fiefdoms, both from the manorial and Seebach side. Romrod is the seat of the borrower and the forest inspector. In addition to agriculture and cattle breeding, linen weaving is one of the main trades. A skilled organ builder also lives here. 4 markets are held annually. In the district, namely in the mountain forest and in Göringen, there are several stone quarries that provide material suitable for road construction. There were several villages near Romrod that have now run out. Göringen ( Gorungen ) lay between Romrod and Schellnhausen , from which the name of the Göringer Grund has been preserved. Einhausen ( Eynhusse ) was located between Romrod and Zell , where there are also Einhausen gardens and a walled fountain. Between Romrod and Obergleen was Hirtenrode ( Hirtenrade ), where there is also a brick well. - At the end of the 12th century Romrod Castle was built here, which, along with a large part of the surrounding area, belonged to a family that was now called von Romrod, and which was wealthy enough to be able to join the high nobility . This family, which finally became extinct in the male line, weakened its reputation through divisions. In 1358 Metze von Lißberg, a Romrodian heiress, sold her part of the castle at Romrod to the von Erfa for two hundred and a few pounds hellers, with reservation of the repurchase, and Agnes von Westerburg, the other heir, gave her share at the same time to the Landgraves Heinrich and Otto. This included the court at Hopfgarten in its entirety, part of the court at Zell, part of the court at Kirtorf, the court in Alsfeld, the meadows and mills on the Eiff, etc. The von Erfa swore the landgraves Heinrich and Hermann a truce in 1372 because of of their share at Romrod. The landgraves had the right to redeem it, since one half of Romrod had been resold, and Friedrich von Lißberg, son of the aforementioned Metze von Lißberg, made himself binding in 1374, if the landgraves for this half were those of Erfa would have to give more than 600 marks to want to compensate them. The time at which the landgraves exercised this right is still unknown. The landgraves bought into the entire Romrodian possessions. Romrod was the seat of the judiciary until 1821 and the seat of the district administrator until 1829, at which time the seat was moved to Alsfeld and the district was given the name of Alsfeld. "
In the course of the 14th century the family became impoverished and sold their castle to Landgraves Otto and Heinrich von Hessen . From 1408 at the latest, Romrod also belonged to the Landgraviate of Hesse .
According to the 1846 census , Romrod itself had 1,100 inhabitants.

Courts since 1803
In the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt , the judicial system was reorganized in an executive order of December 9, 1803. The “Hofgericht Gießen” was set up as a court of second instance for the province of Upper Hesse . The jurisdiction of the first instance was carried out by the offices or landlords and thus for Romrod by the Romrod office. The court court was the second instance court for normal civil disputes, and the first instance for civil family law cases and criminal cases. The superior court of appeal in Darmstadt was superordinate .
With the establishment of the Grand Duchy of Hessen (-Darmstadt) in 1806, this function was retained, while the tasks of the first instance were transferred to the newly created regional courts in 1821 as part of the separation of jurisdiction and administration. "Alsfeld Regional Court" was therefore the name of the court of first instance in Alsfeld from 1821 to 1879, today's district court, which was responsible for Romrod.
On the occasion of the introduction of the Courts Constitution Act with effect from October 1, 1879, as a result of which the previous grand-ducal Hessian regional courts were replaced by local courts in the same place, while the newly created regional courts now functioned as higher courts, the name was changed to the Alsfeld district court and the district was assigned to the district of the regional court Pouring . In the Federal Republic of Germany, the superordinate instances are the Regional Court of Giessen, the Higher Regional Court of Frankfurt am Main and the Federal Court of Justice as the last instance.
