Georg Wilhelm Justin Wagner

Georg Wilhelm Justin Wagner (born April 11, 1793 in Pfungstadt ; † August 31, 1874 in Roßdorf ) was originally a geometer , later a historian and first elected mayor of Roßdorf near Darmstadt .

Life

Georg Wilhelm Justin Wagner was born in 1793 as the son of pastor Karl Samuel Wagner . After attending the Darmstadt high school and the forestry school in Lich , he took part in the campaign of 1814 as a volunteer Hessian hunter under the Hereditary Prince Philip of Hesse-Homburg . He then studied forestry and mathematics in Giessen . After passing the state examination to become a geometer, he started working as a geometer in the then Reinheim district from 1820 .

When his father was transferred to Roßdorf, he moved there. From 1822 to 1825 he was mayor of the municipality. From 1827 to 1832 he was then given the technical management of municipal road construction in the Reinheim district. He later privatized in Roßdorf. Since his activity in Reinheim , Wagner was interested in local history and wrote a statistical-topographical description of the Grand Duchy of Hesse in the style of the time (4 volumes, 1829–1831). After many years of research, his work on the desertions of the Grand Duchy (3 volumes, 1854–1865), inspired by the work of Georg Landau , and the former spiritual pens in the Grand Duchy of Hesse (2 volumes, 1873–1877), which were completed in 1865 in manuscript, appeared the first volume appeared shortly before his death and the second volume was edited by Friedrich Schneider in 1878 .

His estate came to the Hessian State Archives in Darmstadt and is evidence of Wagner's diligent collecting activities. The Grand Duke honored him with his appointment as a councilor . The Justin Wagner School and Wagnerstrasse in Roßdorf are named after him.
