history

Roßdorf is first mentioned in a document in 1250 as Roßedorph . At this time, the Fulda prince abbot Heinrich IV von Erthal enfeoffed Count Diether and Eberhardt I von Katzenelnbogen with the villages of Roßdorf and Gundernhausen. In the historical documents, the place is documented under changing place names over the centuries (the year of mention in brackets): Rosdorf (1321); Rostdorf (1330); Rossdorf (1354); Rosdorff (1361); Roßdorff (1403); Rostorff (1427); Rostroff (1559).

In 1479 the family von Katzenelnbogen died out and the inheritance went to Landgrave Heinrich III. from Hessen over.

In 1621 Bavarian soldiers quartered themselves in Roßdorf and plundered the place. In addition, witch trials took place during which the inhabitants were accused of sorcery. The greatest need for Roßdorf came in 1634/35 during the Thirty Years' War . In the area, the imperial and the Swedes faced each other, who alternately devastated and exploited the entire landscape and severely decimated the population. In the summer of 1635, the plague broke out and the population decimated to 50. In 1672, during the Franco-Dutch War , troops of Louis XIV were quartered . In 1814 Russian soldiers passed through on the way to France . In 1783 it is documented that Roßdorf is part of the Lichtenberg district, which from 1806 belonged to the Starkenburg province of the Grand Duchy of Hesse and where it remains until 1820.

Roßdorf lay in the judicial district of the centering Ober-Ramstadt . The centering was divided into so-called "rice car," each of which a top magistrate board that the Zentgrafen were subordinated. This district had to provide a freight wagon ( rice wagon ) including draft animals and servants for campaigns. Roßdorf belonged to the "Roßdorf Reiswagen", which also includes Gundernhausen and all associated farms and mills. The entire district of Ober-Ramstadt was assigned to the Lichtenberg office . This classification existed until the beginning of the 19th century.

About the District Administrator District Reinheim 1832 came Roßdorf in Dieburg and changed with the local government reform in 1938 in the district of Darmstadt .

The statistical-topographical-historical description of the Grand Duchy of Hesse reports on Roßdorf in 1829:

»Roßdorf (L. Bez. Reinheim) Lutheran Pfarrdorf; is 1 12 hours from Reinheim, 1 hour from Darmstadt and on the road from Darmstadt through the Odenwald. The place, which is partly still surrounded by a dry ditch, has 243 houses and 1529 inhabitants, who are Lutheran with the exception of 3 Reformed, 1 Catholic and 40 Jews. There is 1 church, the beautiful porch of which bears the inscription; DEO SIT GLORIA. MDCCCXXIV .; furthermore 1 parsonage, 2 schoolhouses, 1 town hall, 3 grinding mills with 1 oil mill, important basalt quarries on the Roßberg, 40 linen weavers, 11 Häfner , 16 innkeepers etc. - In 1250 Diether III. and Eberhard I., Count von Katzenellenbogen, enfeoffed with Roßdorf by the Fulda Abbot Heinrich. This fiefdom was much older and was only renewed at that time. After Count Eberhard IV's death in 1353 or 1354, disputes arose over the assets brought in by his mother, Agnes von Bickenbach. Through the arbitration verdict of the Count Palatine Ruprecht des Aeltern, whom both parties had chosen, it was decided in 1354 that Roßdorf and Gundernhausen and Gülten from other villages, on which Agnes Witthum was deposited, the tavern Eberhard von Erbach, who was the only sister of the had deceased count as wife, should remain until Count Johann von Katzenellenbogen had let her back with 1500 Marks. Roßdorf came to Hesse through the Counts of Katzenellenbogen. As the mother church, Roßdorf had 2 altars. An iron mine was in operation in 1579. «

Territorial reform

On January 1, 1977, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the previously independent neighboring community of Gundernhausen was incorporated into Roßdorf by means of state law , while the Darmstadt-Dieburg district was founded, to which Roßdorf has belonged since then. Local districts according to the Hessian municipal code were not established.

Roßdorf belonged to the district court Ober-Ramstadt . In the Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt, the judicial system was reorganized in an executive order of December 9, 1803. The Lichtenberg Office was responsible for Roßdorf. The court court was the second instance court for normal civil disputes, and the first instance for civil family law cases and criminal cases. coat of arms

Roßdorf coat of arms
Blazon : "In the blue shield there is a rising silver moon with an attached horseshoe, underneath a silver rose with a blue clasp, the free field is sprinkled with seven gold stars (5: 2)."

In February 1952 the community of Roßdorf was granted the right to use a coat of arms by the Hessian State Ministry.

Justification of the coat of arms: The basis of the coat of arms is a seal of the common village court of Roßdorf and Gundernhausen. An imprint of this is on the so-called Mansfeld damage directory from 1625, which is kept in the Darmstadt State Archives . This directory contains a list of the losses suffered by the residents of the Upper County of Katzenelnbogen during the Thirty Years' War . One ingredient from the 1950s is the face of the moon, which many Roßdörfern complained about. There is no reliable interpretation of the coat of arms or its individual elements.

flag

The municipal flag was approved on May 6, 1970 and is described as follows: "Above a widened red flag of the municipal coat of arms, flanked on both sides by red and blue."

energy

Wind turbines on the pine head

In 2015, two wind turbines of the type GE Wind Energy 2.5-120 were built on the Tannenkopf in the forest north of the B 26 . With a hub height of 120 m and a rotor diameter of 120 m, these have a total height of 180 m and are therefore around 20 meters lower than conventional wind turbines of this type. The reason for this is the location of the systems in an area of the German Weather Service that is considered to be relevant to disruption . The client is GGEW  AG from Bensheim , the planning is the responsibility of juwi from Wörrstadt . The construction work began with the early clearing of the forest sites in February 2014 after the building application had been submitted in January. On April 23, 2015, GGEW's application for the construction of the facilities was approved. An output of around 15,000 MWh per year is forecast. The official start of construction took place on July 27, 2015. The operator held a topping-out ceremony on October 11, and the towers were erected from November. The wind turbines were completed at the end of December 2015. A community of interests has been formed against the construction of the systems.
