Reinhard Friedrich Burger (born May 27, 1949 in Roßdorf (near Darmstadt) ) is a German microbiologist . From 2010 to the end of February 2015 he was President of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

Life

After studying biology, microbiology and immunology, Burger received his doctorate in 1976 . In 1982 he completed his habilitation. From 1983 to 1987 he was Professor of Immunology at the University of Heidelberg . He then worked at the National Institutes of Health . Burger has been Professor of Immunology at the Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin) since 1989 . He was appointed Deputy Director of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in 1997, having headed the Immunology Department since 1987. Burger headed the Infectious Diseases Department from 1998 and became Deputy President of the agency in 2001. From August 2010 to February 2015 he was President of the Robert Koch Institute. In 2011 he was elected to the board of directors of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes . When the Blood Working Group (RKI) was founded in 1993, he was the first chairman of this panel of experts. This national committee of experts advises the Federal Government on issues relating to the safety and effective use of blood components and plasma derivatives.

Honors

On September 15, 2015, Burger was awarded the Franz-Oehlecker Medal at the annual congress of the German Society for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohematology (DGTI) in Basel . This award honored in particular his services to the infection safety of blood and blood products, as well as his leadership of the working group blood in the DGTI.
