The German Society for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohematology (DGTI) is a medical-scientific specialist society under German law in German-speaking countries for the promotion of research, teaching and patient care in transfusion medicine and its border areas. It was founded in 1954 as the German Society for Blood Transfusion . In 1973 it was renamed the German Society for Blood Transfusion and Immunohematology to clarify the necessity of blood group serological examinations before blood transfusions . In connection with the expansion of the specialist area to include all allogeneic therapies, the name was changed to the German Society for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohematology in 1986 .

The DGTI has over 1000 members, mostly from German-speaking countries. In addition to an annual convention and other advancements in education, training and further education specialist transfusion medicine it maintains since 1990 the English-language scientific journal Transfusion Medicine and Hemotherapy (formerly Infusion Therapy and Transfusion Medicine ) and, since 2011, the German-language training journal Transfusion Medicine .
