Jörg Hacker
Jörg Hinrich Hacker (born February 13, 1952 in Grevesmühlen ) is a German biologist . 2008–2010 he was President of the Robert Koch Institute . Until the end of February 2020 he was President of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
Life
Hacker studied biology at the Martin Luther University in Halle from 1970 to 1974 and received his doctorate A in 1979 . 1980–1988 he was a research assistant at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg , where he qualified as a professor in 1986 in microbiology . From 1988–1993 he was Professor of Microbiology at the University of Würzburg. In 1993 he switched to the chair for molecular infection biology. He was the director of the Würzburg Institute until 2008. From 2003 to 2009 he was Vice President of the German Research Foundation . From March 2008 to March 2010, he was Reinhard Kurth's successor as President of the Robert Koch Institute . On October 1, 2009, Hacker was elected President of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina - National Academy of Sciences in Halle (Saale) . The official handover took place on February 26, 2010, so that he took office on March 1, 2010. In 2014 he was re-elected for five years (2015–2020).
In 2013, Hacker was appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
He is also chairman of the foundation board of the Arthur Burkhardt Foundation for the Promotion of Science.
Act
His main areas of work are the molecular biological analysis of bacterial pathogens (including islands of pathogenicity ), investigations into their spread and variability, and interactions with host cells. From 2001 to 2008 he was co-coordinator of the BMBF program PathoGenoMik and PathoGenoMik Plus. From 2005 to 2010 he coordinated the EU program EuroPathoGenomics (6th Framework Program of the EU, “Network of Excellence”). From 2006 to 2010 Jörg Hacker was a member and deputy spokesman of the Transregio Collaborative Research Center 34 “Pathophysiology in Staphylococci”, Universities of Greifswald , Tübingen and Würzburg . From 2007 to 2010 he was the spokesman for the “E. coli ”in the ERA-NET PathoGenoMics network (European cooperation and coordination of genome sequencing and functional genomics of human pathogenic microorganisms).
