American Society for Microbiology

The American Society for Microbiology , abbreviated ASM (German: American Society for Microbiology), is an association of microbiologists based in Washington, DC , United States . The ASM was founded in 1899 and at that time consisted of 59 members.

Goals and Activities

The aims of the ASM are to promote microbiology and its public awareness, the application of microbiology for the benefit of mankind and the expansion of knowledge in the field of microbiology.

The activities of the ASM consist of

  • supporting the training and further education of microbiologists,
  • informing the public in the field of microbiology,
  • Publication of specialist journals and specialist books,
  • the organization of scientific conferences , workshops and colloquiums .

Structure and membership

Anyone who is interested in microbiology and has at least a bachelor's degree in microbiology or a related science or equivalent experience can become a member of the ASM . The number of members in 2011 was more than 43,000, of which almost two-thirds were based in the US and more than a third were outside the US. The ASM is the microbiologist association with the largest number of members.

The society is divided into 27 scientific departments, 35 local groups, 6 committees responsible for education, international affairs, conventions, memberships, public and scientific affairs and publications, and the American Academy of Microbiology . The management consists of a president, a vice-president who takes over from the president after his term of office, a secretary and a treasurer.
