history

Already at the beginning of the 20th century the establishment of a university in Norrland was discussed . This was due to the relatively low level of education of the population and a lack of lawyers, doctors and teachers in this region.

In 1946 the establishment of a university was discussed again when the Umeå- born member of the Reichstag, Gösta Skoglund, submitted an application to investigate the university issue in northern Sweden. At the time it was unclear in which city the university was to be built; However, Härnösand and Umeå were in discussion from the start .

However, the request was rejected. Another proposal to build a Reich Hospital with an associated dental training was also not approved. Despite the setbacks, efforts were made to strengthen Umeå's position as the main candidate for the location of the first university in Norrland.

The decision in 1951 to found a scientific library in Umeå ultimately brought the decisive advantage. The foundation stone for the establishment of the university was laid with the establishment of the library. In 1956 Umeå finally got a dental clinic, whereupon the construction of student accommodation and the house of a student association began.

As a result, a medical department was also started in 1957. After the Medical School, the Scientific Library and the Dental Clinic were up and running, it was only a matter of time before a university was founded in Umeå. The application to found a university was finally accepted by the Reichstag in 1963. Two years later, on September 17, 1965, the university was officially opened by King Gustav VI. Adolf inaugurated.
