The Konstfack ( Swedish for art subject) is a Swedish art college founded in Stockholm in 1844 .
Konstfack is Sweden's largest art and design school. Since 2004 the school has been located in the old premises of the telecommunications company Ericsson at Midsommarkransen in southern Stockholm. The building was built between 1935 and 1948 as a telephone factory based on plans by T. Wennerholm. It has been converted into an art and design school with an area of 20,300 m². It now enjoys the protection of an architectural monument .
history
In 1844, Nils Månsson Mangelgren, an artist and ethnographer , started a Söndags-Rit-skola för Handtverkare (Sunday drawing school for craftsmen). There were nine different craft occupations, u. a. Tiled stove setter and silk weaver .
In 1845 the school was handed over to the newly formed Svenska Slöjdföreningen (Swedish Association for Craftsmanship) and was given the name Svenska Slöjdföreningens skola .
In 1857 the first two female students were admitted: Mamsell Sofi Granberg and Mamsell Matilda Andersson. The following year, all female students were welcome.
In 1859 the school became public and changed the name to Tekniska skolan (Technical School).
In 1945 the Konstfackskolan (the art school) was established. The various branches of study were decorative painting , sculpture , ceramics , furniture , metalwork , advertising and bookbinding .
In 1959, the new school building designed by the architect Gösta Åberg was inaugurated at 191 Vallhallavägen in Stockholm. Now the students had well-equipped workshops.
In 1978 the Konstfackskola was declared a university .
In 1993 the college got its current name Konstfack .
In 2004 the university moved into the renovated factory premises of the Ericsson company on Midsommarkransen.
