The Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan (German: Gymnastik- und Sporthochschule), often abbreviated as GIH , is a Swedish university in Stockholm . The facility specializes in sports science .

background

At the instigation of Pehr Henrik Ling , the school was founded in 1813 under the name Kungliga Gymnastiska Centralinstitutet and developed into the center of the Swedish sports movement. While gymnastics was the focus at the beginning , the university, where women were studying from the 1860s, opened up to other sports over the years. With the Ling gymnastics, the GiH is considered the cradle of movement therapy . As a result, it changed its name in 1966 and gave itself the current name. In 1992 it was merged with Lärarhögskolan Stockholms and was then called Idrottshögskolan i Stockholm until 2005 .

There is a focus on sports medicine, but also for sports teachers and trainers, whereby the university seeks a close connection between theory and practice.
