The Newman Institute is a scientific university , based in Uppsala ( Sweden ). Its range of courses covers the subjects of Catholic theology , philosophy and cultural studies . The institute was founded in 2001 and named after the English Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801–1890); it is under the sponsorship of the Jesuit order . The Newman Institute has been officially recognized since 2010 so that it can award the bachelor's degree ( candidate examination ) in its own name . The theological master's is awarded in cooperation with the private theological college ( Det teologiske Menighetsfakultet ) Oslo.
The teaching takes place predominantly in Uppsala, partly also in Stockholm and Vadstena . The language of instruction is Swedish; some of the courses are offered in English. Since 2002, individual courses have been held in collaboration with Uppsala University . In addition, the Newman Institute cooperates with several universities worldwide as part of the Erasmus program , such as the Philosophical-Theological University Sankt Georgen (Frankfurt am Main), the Pontifical University John Paul II (Krakow, Poland), the faculty for Catholic theology of the university Tilburg (Netherlands) and the Ukrainian Catholic University (Lviv). The institute's curriculum is coordinated with that of the partner universities, so that a comparatively intensive academic exchange is possible. The Newman Institute is also responsible for the theological and philosophical training of candidates for the priesthood in the seminary of the diocese of Stockholm and thus all of Sweden. There is also an Environment and Justice study program for which the former Swedish Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren is responsible.

The teaching staff comprises (2010) around 25 lecturers and professors, almost half of whom are employed by the institute itself.
The institute building is located in the center of the city in close proximity to the university and its main library, Carolina Rediviva . It has its own specialist library with over 5,000 media.
The academic publication organ of the university is the journal Signum - Katolsk orientering om kyrka, kultur och samhälle , founded in 1975 , whose thematic spectrum covers questions about religion , culture , ethics , research and society . The magazine appears in eight print editions per year.
