The Ukrainian Catholic University ( Ukrainian Український Католицький Університет ( УКУ ) Ukrajinskyj Katolyzkyj Uniwersytet (UKU) ; English Ukrainian Catholic University ( UCU ) ) in Lviv is a Catholic University affiliated with the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church . It is the first Catholic university established on the territory of the former Soviet Union and the first university founded by an Eastern Catholic Church in the Slavic region.

history

The Ukrainian Catholic University emerged as the successor to the Greek Catholic Academy, which was established in 1938 by Metropolitan Andrej Scheptyzkyj in Lemberg, which was then part of Poland . Metropolitan Jossyf Slipyj became the first rector of this academy. After its closure in 1944, the "Ukrainian Catholic University in Rome" was founded in 1963 as a replacement, and Jossyf Slipyj took over the management. In 1994, based on the origins of this institution, a “Lviv Theological Academy” was reopened, which in 1998 was recognized as a university by the Congregation for Catholic Education .

founding

The foundation stone of the UCU was laid in the presence of Pope John Paul II on June 26, 2001. On June 29, 2002, the opening ceremony of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv was attended by high-ranking church representatives of the "Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church" , Rectors from European and American colleges and universities, as well as government officials.

Teaching and scientific goals

The Ukrainian Catholic University is an open, not state-bound, academic institution, which is connected to the Eastern Christian tradition and lives it. She wants to serve Ukraine with high international and professional work and promote it for the glory of God , the common good and stand up for the dignity of the human person . (Excerpt from the university statutes) Here she takes the premise that learning is not just a process of accumulating knowledge and information ; rather, learning is determined by spiritual and social values and creates moral behavior with critical understanding; Learning develops a sense of personal responsibility.

Partnerships

The Ukrainian Catholic University is a member of several academic associations , including the International Association of Catholic Universities, Association of Catholic Universities in Europe and the Association of Colleges and Universities. The aim of the exchange programs with other universities is to gain international friends and partners as well as intellectual exchange with different generations of students and professors .

Faculties and subjects

The Faculty of Theology and Philosophy and the Faculty of Human Sciences with a focus on humanism have been established at UCU . These two faculties offer the following subjects: Theology, Philosophy, Human Sciences , Classical Art and English as a Foreign Language.
