history

founding

Kamyanets-Podilskyi technical school on a pre-revolutionary postcard from the early 20th century (c. 1910)

Pedagogical schools existed in Kamianets-Podilskyi as early as the end of the 19th century. These were the one-year courses for teacher preparation for elementary school, the two-year courses, the teachers' seminar, etc. In the years of the Ukrainian People's Republic , Kamianets-Podilskyi played an important political and cultural role. The founding of the state university, which took place on August 17, 1918, became a major and striking event in the life of the city. The ceremonial opening of the university took place on October 22, 1918. Several hundreds of guests from different regions of Ukraine came to this ceremony. The university received over 1000 congratulatory telegrams and 400 welcoming letters. Delegations from all walks of life took part in the celebrations.

The solemn thanksgiving service was held in all city churches and a cloister went through the city. The opening ceremony took place at the meeting of the professors' council in the Volkshaus (today's Kulturhaus). After that a big festive concert was given. The Ukrainian public celebrated the establishment of a new educational and cultural center in the young Ukrainian People's Republic.

The first rector of the university was the Ukrainian linguist, ethnographer and historian, Professor Ivan Ivanovich Ohiyenko . The lectures held scientists like Petro Butschynskyj , Mykhaylo Draj-Chmara , LT Bilezkyj, OS Neselowskyj, Dmytro Doroshenko , Volodymyr Herynowytsch , NT Hamorak, IA Ljubarskyj ua To study at the university, the students from came Podolia , Galicia , Bukovina , in the area Kiev , Chernihiv and other regions of Ukraine. In 1920 the university had about 1,400 students studying in the five faculties: physical-mathematical, historical-philological, theological, agricultural and law faculties. The university had three buildings, a library with 33,000 volumes, an observatory , a weather station , 24 cabinets and laboratories, and a model economy in Panivtsi village .

1920 to 1991

The defeat of the Ukrainian national liberation movement in the autumn of 1920 also determined the history of the university. The non-Ukrainian regime did everything possible to erase any memory of this college from memory. All documents and materials about the university were kept under lock and key, and city guides published during the Soviet period neither mention the university nor a member of its faculty. As early as January 1921, the university was reorganized into the Institute of Theoretical Sciences. But on February 26th of the same year this institute was reorganized into two independent educational establishments: the Institute for Popular Education and the Agricultural Institute. The Institute for Popular Education had two faculties - the physical-mathematical and the social-scientific faculty, which continued their work under difficult circumstances. The lecturers and students starved, many of them were subjected to the "purges" and expelled from the university. But the reorganization continued. On October 18 of the same year 1921, the physical-mathematical and social science faculties were dissolved and replaced by the faculty for vocational training. After a year, on October 26, 1922, the college underwent another transformation: the Institute for Popular Education was reorganized into the Institute for Social Education. All the repeated redesigns of the 1920s - 1930s meant that the uniqueness and national-cultural color of the former university were destroyed. On October 1, 1928, the college had 211 students and 20 lecturers. The remote department was opened here in the early 1930s.

The famine and reprisals from 1932 to 1933 were another tragic period in the life of the institute. Many editors were arrested and imprisoned: WO Herynowytsch, A. Marzynjuk, IA Ljubarskyj, HD Butko, PS Palko, KA Pol, WP Chranewytsch, H. Bushok, IA Myronez, WK Bernazkyj, MO Draj-Chmara, PH Klepazkyj, IJ Kulyk, VI Cheeterykov and others. But even under these dramatic circumstances, the institute continued its work and trained specialist teachers. From 1933 to 1934 the pedagogical institute was established with a four-year study plan, but it was liquidated as early as 1935. In 1939 the Institute for Teacher Education was created in Kamianets-Podilskyi and on September 1, 1940 it had 482 students. When the course became subject to fees, more than 100 students had to leave the institute.

On July 2, 1941, the institute had to stop teaching: the front of the Second World War was approaching. Many students and lecturers were drafted and fought against the fascists. The work of the institute was interrupted from 1941 to 1944 by the war, but immediately after the liberation of the city in March 1944, the historical-philological and physical-mathematical faculties resumed teaching.

From January 30, 1947 to December 5, 1966, the institute was headed by IS Zelenyuk, who had done a great deal to strengthen the material base of the university. From 1948 to 1949 the teacher training institute was reorganized into a pedagogical institute and this institute worked for almost 50 years - until 1997. In these decades new faculties were also opened: the Faculty of Physical Education (1949), the Faculty of Pedagogy and Methodology of the Lower School ( 1960), the historical-philological faculty was divided into two independent faculties in 1968.

Since 1992

In 1992 the sixth faculty - Defectology (now the Human Development Faculty) was opened. The number of students increased from year to year. From 1966 to 1977 IW Iwach headed the university and from 1977 to 2001 held the post of Rector Professor Kopylov AO In the field of scientific work, the institute achieved particularly great success and took the leading position among the educational universities of the country. The institute got three new teaching buildings. Two nine-story dormitories were built. The university has a total of six dormitories, where around 85% of all students live. The library has nearly 1 million volumes and is one of the largest among the country's university libraries.

In line with the continuation of the history of the old university, the Kamianets-Podilskyi State Pedagogical University was reopened on June 28, 1997 by decision of the Ukrainian government.
