history

The university was founded on July 1, 1937 as the State Pedagogical Institute by decree of the Ukrainian SSR . The founding rector was Olexandr Evdokymenko , who was imprisoned for ten years during the Stalin purges in 1938 . The university initially had two faculties (history and philology) and five chairs.

Between 1940 and 1961 the college was run by Serhiy Ksenofotnow, then by Mykola Khoroschajlow. In 1964 the institute was affiliated to the Kharkiv State University (today: National Vasyl Karasin University of Kharkiv ). By decree of the Soviet Union (USSR) in 1965 the institute became independent and run as a Donetsk State University ; the first director was Professor Leonid Lytwynenko (1965–1968).

In 1965 the faculties of biology and physics were opened, the first postgraduate study programs were offered and a student campus was built.

Under the aegis of the directors Yuri Shevlyakov (1968-1970) and Hryhoryj Tymoshenko (1970-1975) the 12-story main building and the university museum were built. The directors Hryhoryj Ponomarenko (1975-1986) and Volodymyr Shevchenko (from 1986) pushed the further expansion of the university. On September 11, 2000, it was renamed the Donetsk National University by decree of the Ukrainian President .

As a result, the university moved to Vinnytsia, whereby a significant part of the teaching staff and students did not follow the move, according to the recruiter of the part of the university that remained in Donetsk, but stayed in Donetsk. The university's facilities are divided into four building complexes in the city of Vinnytsia.
