The National W. N. Karasin University Kharkiv ( Ukrainian Харківський національний університет імені В. Н. Каразіна , Russian Харьковский национальный университет имени В. Н. Каразина ) in Kharkiv , with about 12,000 students and about 1,300 employees one of the major universities in Ukraine . It was founded in 1804 on the initiative of Wassyl Karasin and opened in 1805. It is the second oldest university in Ukraine after the University of Lviv .
