The Liberty Square ( Ukrainian Майдан Свободи / Площа Свободи ; Russian Площадь Свободы ) in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv is one of the largest town squares in Europe.
history
The square in the center of Kharkiv was planned between 1923 and 1925 and completed by 1931. It was originally called Dzerzhinskiplatz ( Площа Дзержинського ), after the professional communist revolutionary Felix Dzerzhinsky . During the German occupation of the city the place was 1,942 square Wehrmacht and from late March to August 23, 1943 Place of Leibstandarte SS . After Ukraine gained independence in the early 1990s, the square was called Independence Square ( Площа Незалежності ) and since 1998 it has been called Freedom Square.
Design and development
The course is about 690–750 m long, 96–125 m wide and has an area of about 11.5 hectares . In the northwest, the square is circular with a park in the middle, while on the southeast side it has a rectangular, undeveloped area. On the square is the main building of the National Vasyl Karasin University of Kharkiv and the Dershprom building, the first Soviet 13-story skyscraper in the style of constructivism, completed in 1928 . Other buildings on the square were built in the style of socialist classicism . The square is served by two subway lines of the Kharkiv Metro , which cross under the square. At the transition from the round to the right-angled part of the square stood a Lenin monument , inaugurated on November 5, 1963, and a total of 20.2 m high . The 8.5 m high bronze sculpture of Lenin stood on a pedestal made of red granite. On the evening of September 28, 2014, the statue of Lenin was overthrown by pro-Ukrainian demonstrators in Freedom Square. The base was removed in 2018.
