The National I.-I. Mechnikov University Odessa ( Russian Одесский национальный университет имени И. И. Мечникова , Ukrainian Одеський національний університет імені І.І. Мечникова ) is a university in the southern Ukrainian city of Odessa . Today it is named after the Russian zoologist and anatomist Ilja I. Metschnikow .

The university is one of the oldest and most important universities in Ukraine . It consists of 10 faculties and four institutes and, in addition to several locations in Odessa itself, also has facilities in the Odessa suburb of Chornomorsk and in the city of Mykolaiv . The university also includes the Odessa observatory and one of the largest scientific libraries in Ukraine.

The university was founded in 1865 by an edict of Tsar Alexander II and was initially called Imperatorskij Novorossijskij Universitet ( Imperial New Russian University ). It originated from the former Lycée Richelieu in Odessa.
