Odessa observatory

The Odeska Astronomitschna Obserwatorija (OAO, Ukrainian Оде́ська астрономічна обсерваторія , English Odessa Observatory , IAU code 086) is an observatory in the city of Odessa in southern Ukraine.

The observatory belongs to the National Ilya-Ilyich-Mechnikov University of Odessa . The observatory was founded in 1870 and has been expanding ever since. Observations can be made from four locations, two in the suburbs and two on mountains, using a number of telescopes .

The largest telescopes are two with 80 cm, one with 60 cm, another two with 50 cm and one with 35 cm aperture; the latter is a Schmidt camera . Together with the Vihorlat observatory , a 1 m telescope was set up at Kolonicke Sedlo . Significant results include a. a sky survey begun in 1957 with 80,000 photo plates.
