Mark Grigorjewitsch Kerin ( Ukrainian Марко Григорович Крейн , Russian Марк Григорьевич Крейн ; * April 3 jul. / April 16,  1907 greg. In Kiev ; † October 17, 1989 in Odessa ) was a Soviet mathematician . His main area of ​​work was functional analysis , in particular operator theory and the theory of differential equations .

Life

Kerin, who came from a family of Jewish timber merchants, showed mathematical talent at an early age and attended courses at the University of Odessa at the age of 14 . In 1926 he was accepted for doctoral studies by Nikolai Grigoryevich Chebotaryov despite the lack of previous university education . In 1929 he received his doctorate (Russian doctoral degree, equivalent to habilitation) in Odessa and from then on stayed at the university (his doctoral supervisor Chebotaryev went to Kazan in 1928 ). In Odessa he built an important school of functional analysis. It included AP Artyomenko (who was considered one of his most talented students but disappeared after the war), David Milman , Witold Lwowitsch Schmulian , Moshe Livsic , Mark A. Rutman and Vladimir A. Potapov, as well as his colleague in Odessa Boris Jakowlewitsch Levin . During the German occupation of Crimea from 1941 to 1944, he was evacuated with the university and was at the Aviation Institute in Kuibyshev . Although he returned to Odessa in 1944, he was dismissed shortly afterwards for Jewish nationalism (after Israel Gohberg, probably because he had too many Jewish students in the 1930s). Instead of the university he was a professor of mechanics at the Institute of Marine Engineers in Odessa and was also part-time at the Mathematical Institute of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kiev, where he was dismissed in 1952, officially because he did not live in Kiev. From 1954 he was a mechanics professor at the Institute of Civil Engineering in Odessa. Various attempts by mathematicians to bring him back to Odessa University failed. However, Kerin built up a very active research group again, some of which met in his private house and in the Odessa Scientific Association . Krein was not allowed to travel abroad.

Kerin set up a center for functional analysis in Odessa in the 1930s . Among other things, he dealt with Banach spaces , the moment problem (a problem originally derived from probability theory of reconstructing measures from their moments ), integral equations and the spectral theory of linear operators . With Naum Iljitsch Achijeser around 1937 he also worked on extreme problems of differentiable periodic functions , an area in which Andrei Kolmogorow was a pioneer before. Later he dealt with harmonic analysis , duality theorems and operator algebras in representation theory . He wrote over 270 papers and several monographs. Associated with his name are the terms Tannaka-Kerin duality (also named after Tadao Tannaka ), Kreinraum , the continuation of Kerin and the sentence of Kerin-Milman .

In 1970 he became an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1981 an external member of the National Academy of Sciences . In 1982 he received the Wolf Prize , along with Hassler Whitney . In 1966 he gave a plenary lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Moscow (Analytic problems and results in the theory of linear operators in Hilbert space).

The Mark Grigoryevich Kerin Prize was donated by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in his honor .

His doctoral students included David Milman, Witold Schmulian, Mark Alexandrowitsch Krasnoselski , Mark Neumark , Israel Gohberg .

His younger brother Selim Grigoryevich Kerin was also a mathematician and dealt with functional analysis.
