Mark Alexandrovich Krasnoselsky

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mark Krasnosel'skii , ( Russian Марк Александрович Красносельский , Ukrainian Марк Олександрович Красносельський Mark Oleksandrowytsch Krasnosselskyj , English transcription Mark Krasnosel'skii * 27. April 1920 in Starokostiantyniv , Ukrainian SSR , † 13 February 1997 in Moscow , Russia ) was a Soviet mathematician .

Krasnoselski studied at the University of Kiev (after the German invasion evacuated to Kazakhstan ) with the degree in 1942. After four years of military service in the Second World War, he received his doctorate in 1948 at the Institute of Mathematics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kiev under Mark Krein , and then researched there . In 1950 he completed his habilitation ( Russian doctorate ). From 1952 to 1967 he was a professor at the Voronezh State University and then at the Institute for Control Theory of the Soviet Academy of Sciences . He headed a laboratory there from 1974 to 1990. After that he was at the Institute for Information Transmission Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

With some work in the 1960s, he is considered to be one of the founders of modern nonlinear functional analysis including the development of topological methods and numerous applications. The Krasnoselski Theorem named after him and the Krasnoselski Fixed Point Theorem come from him .

He was an honorary doctorate in Rouen (1996), received the Humboldt Research Prize and the Andronov Prize of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.
