Starokostjantyniw (Ukrainian Старокостянтинів ; Russian Староконстантинов / Starokonstantinow , Polish Starokonstantynów ) is a city in Ukraine . The city is located about 41 kilometers northeast of the Oblast capital Khmelnyzkyj on the Slutsch River .
The place was founded in 1561 by Konstanty Wasyl Ostrogski (other sources name the year 1525 and Konstantin Iwanowitsch Ostroschski as the founder) and was initially in Poland in the Kiev Voivodeship . In 1795 the place came to Russia through the third partition of Poland and was raised to a city (in the Volhynia governorate ). It was called Konstantynów until the 19th century . The extension Staro- (= "old") was added later.
Jews settled in the town as early as the 16th century . In 1939 almost a third of the population was Jewish. After the German invasion of the Soviet Union , the Jewish residents were murdered between August 1941 and November 1942. The synagogue from the early 17th century was destroyed.
In 1999 the city was placed under oblast administration.
The Kelmenzi – Kalinkawitschy railway runs west of the city, and the Starokostjantyniw – Kalyniwka railway branches off to the east.
