Surname

Until the beginning of the 18th century, the city was called "Dunajgorod" (Ukrainian Дунайгород ). Although the name of the city is similar to the Ukrainian name of the Danube (Ukrainian Дунай Dunaj ), it probably does not go back to this, as Dunajiwzi is too far away from the Danube. At least three other hypotheses of Dunayivtsi's name origin have therefore been proposed.

"Dunaj" could be derived from the Indo-European ( Old Indian , Gothic and Celtic ) roots "Danu" , "Duna" and "Don" , which meant "water" or "the river" and refer to the Ternawka River and many ponds relate in the area. The word “dunaj” also occurs in Ukrainian songs, in which it simply means “water, flood”. The name of the city may also come from the family name “Dunaj” , which participants wore on Danube hikes. According to a third hypothesis, Dunayivtsi was made by settlers from a settlement with a similar name, for example Dunayiv and Dunayivka . founded. From the end of the 1820s until the independence of Ukraine, Dunayivtsi was also known colloquially as the “City of Weavers”.
