Bolesław Woytowicz

Bolesław Woytowicz (born December 5, 1899 in Dunajiwzi , † June 11, 1980 in Katowice ) was a Polish composer, pianist and music teacher.

Woytowicz had piano lessons from 1913 and was a student of Aleksander Wielhorski from 1916–17 . After studying philology at the University of Kiev and mathematics and law in Warsaw, he studied piano with Aleksander Michałowski and composition with Felicjan Szopski and Witold Maliszewski from 1920 to 1924 at the Warsaw Conservatory . From 1929 to 1932 he studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris.

In 1924 he undertook a concert tour as a pianist through Europe, which took him a. a. to France, Germany and Austria, to Czechoslovakia and Switzerland, to Holland and the Baltic States. In 1927 he was a participant in the First International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. With his piano concerto he won second prize in the Kronenberg composition competition in 1932 .

From 1924 to 1939 Woytowicz taught at the Warsaw Conservatory. During the Second World War he organized concerts in the Sztuki Salon , where musicians such as Eugenia Umińska , Irena Dubiska , Witold Lutosławski , Andrzej Panufnik , Zbigniew Drzewiecki , Paweł Lewiecki , Ewa Bandrowska-Turska , Vittoria Calma , Ada Sari and Adam Didur performed.

From 1945 to 1975 Woytowicz led piano and composition classes at the State Music Academy in Katowice . He also taught at the State Music Academy in Warsaw and the Music Academy in Cracow . His students include the pianist Urszula Mitręga , Zofia Owińska , Irena Protasewicz , Monika Sikora-Wojtacha , Maria Szraiber and Zbigniew Śliwiński and the composer Tadeusz Baird , Wojciech Kilar , Witold Szalonek , Józef Świder , Romuald Twardowski and Peter Paul Koprowski .
