The National Taras Shevchenko University of Kiev ( Ukrainian Київський національний університет імені Тараса Шевченка ) is the university of the Ukrainian capital Kiev .

The university, named after the Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko , was founded in 1833 as St. Vladimir University and currently has around 20,000 students . The university's facilities are distributed in the city center and on campus in the south of the city. The so-called student town with numerous dormitories is located around the campus. Most courses are taught in Ukrainian. The rector of the university has been Leonid Huberskyj since 2008, succeeding Viktor Skopenko , who headed the university between 1985 and 2008 .

history

The university was founded on November 8, 1833 as St. Vladimir University to combat the Polish and Polish-oriented upper classes in Kiev on the instructions of the Russian Emperor Nikolaus I and following a decree by the Minister of Education Sergei S. Uvarow . The opening ceremony took place on July 15, 1834, after which the first 62 students began their studies for a period of four years.

The library and the first technical equipment of the university came from the lyceum of the western Ukrainian city of Kremenets , which was closed in 1831 in the course of the Polish November Uprising . In addition, numerous professors from the Lyceum Kremenez came to the newly founded university.

In addition to these, the Russian government had invited several professors from the Baltic provinces, in particular from Dorpat University , to Kiev. Due to the 30 professors of German origin who initially taught at the university and the university was also based on an educational system taken over from Germany, it has had a very strong German influence since it began teaching in 1834.

At first there was only one philosophical faculty with two departments for philology as well as physics and mathematics and until the October Revolution there was a Catholic and an Orthodox chapel. The Faculty of Law was founded in 1835 and the Faculty of Medicine in 1841. It was based on the closed medical faculty of the University of Vilnius . The study costs of the university, which is generally subject to a fee, could be avoided by undertaking to work as a teacher or public servant for 6 years after studying free of charge.

After being renamed between 1920 and 1932, the university was called the Kiev Institute for National Education named after Mychajlo Petrowytsch Drahomanow , then Kiev State University and since 1939 it is named after Taras Shevchenko.

The motto of the order "Benefit, Honor and Glory" (Latin: "Utilitas, Honor et Gloria") was also the motto of the university.

On the facade of the main building there are memorial plaques in honor of the lecturers, students and T. Shevchenko and a plaque for the staff of the hunter battalion.
