Mykola Dmytrowytsch Straschesko (* October 17 . Jul / 29. October  1876 greg. In Odessa , Kherson Gubernia , Russian Empire ; † 27. June 1952 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian - Soviet scientist, physician and cardiologist .

Straschesko was a member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from 1934 , since 1943 a member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and from 1944 a member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR.

Life

Mykola Straschesko was born in Odessa in 1876 into a family of lawyers and went to school there. From 1894 to 1899 he studied at the medical faculty of the Kiev Vladimir University and improved his education abroad (Paris, Berlin) in 1901/1902. Between 1902 and 1904 he worked under the direction of Ivan Pavlov at the Institute for Experimental Medicine of the St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy , where he received his doctorate in 1904 for his doctoral thesis Physiology of Digestion . In the same year he returned to Kiev and began his medical work at the university clinic.

Straschesko was from 1907 to 1919 professor at the Kiev Medical Institute for Women and from 1922 to professor at the Kiev Medical Institute. In March 1936 he was the founder and from that time until 1952 also director of the Ukrainian Institute for Clinical Medicine (today the Institute of Cardiology named after him ( Інститут кардіології імені академіка М. Д. Стражеска )).

He died after a heart attack in 1952 in Kiev and was buried there in the Lukjanivska cemetery .

Honors

In 1934 Straschesko was honored with the title of Honored Scientist of the USSR , in 1945 he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor , and in 1947 Straschesko received the title Hero of Socialist Labor and the Order of Lenin . A memorial was inaugurated in his memory at the Research Institute for Cardiology in Kiev in 1978 and there are memorial plaques on his Kiev residential building and on the building of the former Research Institute for Clinical Medicine. In 1961 a street in Kiev was named after him. The Ukrainian National Bank issued a two hryvnia commemorative coin with his portrait on his 130th birthday in 2006 .
