Pavlo Petrowytsch Fylypowytsch ( Ukrainian Павло Петрович Филипович ; born August 20 . Jul / 1. September  1891 greg. In Kajtaniwka , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 3. November 1937 in Sandarmoch , Karelian ASSR , Soviet Union ) was a Ukrainian writer, literary critic and translator. Life

Pavlo Fylypowytsch was born into a priestly family in the village of Kajtaniwka near Katerynopil in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Cherkassy . He graduated from high school in 1910 with honors at the Kiev Pavlo Galagan High School ( Колегія Павла Ґалаґана ) and then studied law until 1915, and later Slavic-Russian philology at the Vladimir University in Kiev . From 1917 on Fylypowytsch was a private lecturer and from 1933 professor of literary history at the Kiev University. He was an associate member of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and secretary of its historical-literary society.

He published his first poems in 1910 under the pseudonym Pawel Zorev in Russian-language magazines. After the October Revolution of 1917, Fylypovych began to write in Ukrainian. In the 1920s, along with Mykola Serow , Jurij Klen , Mychajlo Draj-Chmara and Maksym Rylskyj, he was a member of the “ Ukrainian Neoclassics ” group of artists .

In 1935 Fylypowytsch was arrested and sentenced in 1936 by the military court of the Kiev military district in a closed court hearing to 10 years imprisonment and confiscation of his property and taken to the gulag on the Solovetsky Islands . On October 9, 1937, he was finally sentenced to death by a special court of the NKVD without giving any reason and shot on November 3, 1937 on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the October Revolution of 1917.
